Merrin pulls Varikka through the small opening, and they both stumble into the narrow passageway on the other side. The air is stale, and the darkness is absolute, but Merrin fumbles in her pack for a torch and lights it, casting flickering shadows on the walls. As she holds it up, Varikka winces in pain, her ankle throbbing with each movement. The passageway stretches out before them, winding deeper into the tower's depths. The sound of rushing water grows fainter, replaced by the creaking of ancient wood and the distant rumble of falling debris. Suddenly, a section of the wall gives way beneath their feet, sending rocks tumbling down the passage.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I help Varikka through the opening, my heart pounding as we emerge into the narrow passageway. The air is musty and stale, but it's a welcome change from the fetid water we just escaped.

"Come on, let's keep moving," I say, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "We don't know how long this place will hold up."

I hold the torch up high, scanning the passageway for any signs of danger. The flickering light casts eerie shadows on the walls, and I can hear the distant rumble of falling debris.

Varikka limps beside me, her face contorted in pain with each step. I can tell she's trying to be brave, but the strain is taking its toll.

"Can you make it?" I ask, my voice soft with concern. "We can rest for a moment if you need to."

I glance back over my shoulder, half-expecting to see those creatures from the pool following us. But all I see is darkness and the faint glow of my torch.

"No, we need to keep going," Varikka says, her voice tight. "We can't afford to stop now."

She takes a deep breath and pushes forward, her teeth gritted against the pain. I nod and follow close behind, my hand on the hilt of my dagger just in case.

"Alright, but let me know if you need to rest," I say, my voice firm. "I've got your back, Varikka."

Together, we venture deeper into the passageway, our footsteps echoing off the ancient stone walls. The air grows colder, and the darkness presses in from all sides. But for now, we're safe from the water and the creatures that lurk beneath its surface.

For now.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika: I limp along beside Merrin, my teeth gritted against the pain in my ankle. "You're right, we need to keep moving," I mutter, my voice strained.

I scan the passageway ahead, my eyes narrowed against the flickering torchlight. "But we can't just rush blindly into the dark. We need to be careful, or we might end up in worse trouble than before."

I reach out and steady myself against the wall, wincing as I put too much weight on my bad ankle. "Oof... maybe you're right about taking a moment to catch our breath," I say, my voice tight with pain.

I lean back against the stone, closing my eyes for a moment as I try to catch my breath. "Thanks again for getting me out of there, Merrin," I say softly. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't shown up when you did."

I open my eyes and look at her, my expression serious. "But we're not out of this yet. That tower is coming down around our ears, and those creatures... they're still out there somewhere."

I shake my head and push myself away from the wall, testing my weight on my ankle. "Alright, let's keep moving," I say, my voice firm with determination. "But we need to stick together and watch each other's backs. This place is dangerous, and we can't afford to let our guard down for even a moment."
