Round 528 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The ground shudders violently beneath Varikka's feet, sending her stumbling forward. Merrin's grip on her mace tightens as she struggles to keep her balance. The tunnel walls continue to crumble, sending rocks and debris cascading down around them. The air is thick with dust, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead. Varikka regains her footing, her mace at the ready. She peers into the dark opening, her eyes straining to see beyond the dust. Suddenly, a faint light flickers to life, illuminating a figure huddled in the corner of the cavern. The figure slowly rises to its feet, revealing a gaunt and wizened old man with sunken eyes. "Elric, the Hermit," Varikka says, her voice barely above a whisper. "What are you doing here?"
Varikka's eyes narrow as she stares at the wizened old man huddled in the corner of the cavern. She grips her mace tighter, ready for anything. "Elric the Hermit," she says, her voice barely a whisper. "What are you doing here? How did you survive?"
The old man's eyes flicker towards Varikka, then back to the ground. His voice is raspy and weak when he speaks. "I've been here for years," he says, his voice a raspy whisper. "Living off the land, staying hidden from...from whatever lurks in these depths."
Varikka takes a step forward, her eyes scanning the cavern for any signs of danger. The tunnel walls are still crumbling around them, sending rocks and debris cascading down with each passing moment. "We need to get out of here," she says firmly. "This place is coming down around our ears. Do you know of any other way out?"
The old man's eyes flicker towards a narrow passage on the far side of the cavern. "There's a way out," he says, his voice barely audible over the groaning of the tunnel walls. "But it's treacherous. The path winds through the depths of the mountain, past pools of poison and hordes of...of things best left unspoken."
Varikka's heart sinks at the old man's words, but she knows they have no choice. They can't stay here, not with the tunnel collapsing around them. "We don't have a choice," she says, her voice grim and determined. "Lead the way, Elric. And pray that whatever gods may be watching over us today will grant us safe passage."
Merrin's eyes dart between Elric and the narrow passage, her heart pounding in her chest. She steps closer to Varikka, her voice hushed. "I don't trust this," she whispers, her gaze fixed on the old man. "Something about him doesn't feel right. And that passage...it looks treacherous. We could get trapped down there, or worse."
Varikka's grip tightens on her mace as she listens to Merrin's words. She knows the halfling is right - they can't afford to take chances, not with their lives on the line. But the tunnel is collapsing around them, and they have no other choice. "We don't have a choice," she says firmly, her voice low and even. "This place is coming down around our ears. We've got to keep moving if we want to survive."
Merrin nods slowly, her eyes still fixed on Elric. "Alright," she says softly. "But we stay sharp, and we watch each other's backs. If anything feels off, we get out of there quick. Got it?"
Varikka nods in agreement, her mace at the ready as she steps towards the narrow passage. "Got it," she says, her voice grim and determined. "Let's hope this old man knows what he's talking about. And let's pray to whatever gods may be listening that we make it out of here alive."
And with a final nod of grim determination, Varikka and Merrin begin to pick their way through the treacherous passage, their hearts pounding in their chests as they pray to whatever gods are listening that they make it out of here alive.
