Round 514 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As we catch our breath on the narrow ledge, the sound of rushing water grows louder, and the air is filled with the stench of noxious gas. The tunnel behind us collapses with a deafening roar, sending clouds of dust and debris billowing into the air. Varikka's ankle throbs in agony, and she winces as I help her to her feet. "We need to keep moving," I say firmly, my hand gripping her arm tightly as we peer into the darkness ahead. "The water's still rising, and the Guardian will be back soon." Suddenly, a faint gurgling sound echoes through the tunnel, followed by the unmistakable splash of water hitting stone. The ledge begins to shudder ominously, threatening to send us tumbling into the churning waters below. With a surge of adrenaline, I grab Varikka's arm and start to drag her towards a narrow opening in the wall, partially hidden by the swirling fog. "We have to get out of here, now!" I shout above the din, my voice barely audible over the roar of the water.
"We have to hurry!" I cry out, my voice echoing off the stone walls as I grab Varikka's arm and start to drag her towards the narrow opening in the wall.
The ledge beneath our feet is slick with algae, and the water is rising fast, lapping at our boots as we struggle to keep our balance. But there's no time to waste. The Guardian is still out there somewhere, and I know that if it catches up to us, we're dead.
As we reach the opening, I pause for a moment, my heart pounding in my chest as I peer into the darkness beyond. The tunnel is narrow, barely wide enough for us to squeeze through side-by-side, and the air is thick with the stench of noxious gas.
"Can you make it?" I ask, turning to Varikka with a look of concern. Her face is pale and drawn, her breathing ragged as she leans heavily against the stone wall.
She nods, her teeth gritted in determination. "I have to," she says, her voice little more than a whisper. "We can't stay here."
With a final glance back at the rising water, I turn and start to wriggle through the opening, my heart racing as I feel the cold stone press against my back. The tunnel is even narrower than it looks, and for a moment I'm afraid that we won't be able to fit.
But with a final, desperate push, I manage to squirm through into the chamber beyond. It's dark and musty, the air thick with the scent of decay, but at least we're out of the water and away from the Guardian for the moment.
I turn back to help Varikka, my hands gripping her arms tightly as I haul her through the opening. She collapses against me, her body shaking with exhaustion and pain as I wrap my arms around her to steady her.
"We made it," I whisper, my voice filled with relief even as a sense of unease gnaws at the edges of my thoughts. "But we're not out of danger yet."
Together, we stagger to our feet, our eyes scanning the chamber for any sign of an escape route. The walls are lined with ancient, crumbling stone, and the ceiling arches overhead, lost in shadow.
But there's no time to explore. We need to keep moving, to find a way out of this labyrinth before the Guardian finds us again.
And so we press on, our hearts pounding in our chests as we venture deeper into the depths of the dungeon, our only hope lying in the unknown darkness ahead.
I grip my mace tightly as I feel the cold stone press against my back, the narrow tunnel squeezing around me like a vice. My heart pounds in my chest as I wriggle forward, the darkness pressing in from all sides.
But then, with a final desperate push, I manage to squirm through into the chamber beyond. I gasp for air, my lungs burning as I pull myself to my feet, my muscles trembling with exhaustion.
I turn back to help Varikka, my hands gripping her arms tightly as I haul her through the opening. She collapses against me, her body shaking with pain and relief as I wrap my arms around her to steady her.
"We made it," I whisper, my voice filled with a strange blend of relief and dread. "But we're not out of danger yet."
Varikka nods, her face pale and drawn in the dim light filtering through the cracks in the crumbling stone walls. "I know," she says, her voice tight with pain. "But where do we go from here? We can't keep running forever."
I shake my head, my eyes scanning the chamber for any sign of an escape route. The walls are lined with ancient, crumbling stone, and the ceiling arches overhead, lost in shadow. But there's nothing here that looks like a way out.
And then, as I turn back to Varikka, I hear it - the faint sound of growling echoing through the tunnel behind us, growing louder by the second. The Guardian. It's following us, and it's getting closer.
"We need to keep moving," I say, my voice tight with urgency as I grab Varikka's arm and start to lead her deeper into the chamber. "We can't let it catch up to us."
Varikka nods, her teeth gritted in determination even as pain flashes across her features. "I know," she says, her voice little more than a whisper. "But I don't know how much further I can go like this. My ankle..."
She trails off, wincing as she takes a step forward on her injured leg. But there's no time to rest, no time to catch our breath. The Guardian is coming, and we need to find a way out of here before it's too late.
And so we press on, our hearts pounding in our chests as we venture deeper into the unknown, our only hope lying in the darkness ahead.
