Phase: escalating

The water was cold, biting into their skin as it swirled around them. Merrin helped Varikka onto the narrow ledge, her arms straining with the effort of supporting the dwarf's weight. They collapsed against the stone wall, panting and shivering, the icy current still lapping at their calves.
Merrin looked back at the gap they'd just escaped through, now completely blocked by a mountain of rubble. "That was too close," she said, her voice shaking slightly as she tried to control her fear. The water level was already rising again, determined to fill every available space in this cursed chamber.
Varikka nodded grimly, clutching her injured ankle. "We need to find another way out before this entire place floods," she said. "And quickly." She looked around, trying to make out details in the gloom. The water was already lapping at their feet on the ledge.
Merrin followed her gaze, her eyes widening as she spotted something moving in the water nearby—a dark shape, sleek and fast, cutting through the current with unnatural grace. She grabbed Varikka's arm. "We have company," she hissed, pointing downstream where more shapes were now visible, circling in the churning waters.
Varrika cursed under her breath, reaching for her crossbow. "How many?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the pain in her ankle.
Merrin squinted, counting quickly. "At least four," she said. "Maybe more." She looked around frantically for any other options—higher ground, a dry passage, anything—but saw only stone walls and rising water.
The creatures in the water seemed to sense their predicament, moving closer with each passing moment. Merrin's heart raced as she realized they were out of time—their makeshift refuge was about to become a death trap.
