Round 493

Phase: escalating

The stone block gave way with a groan of protest, shards cascading downwards like a waterfall in reverse as gravity asserted its brutal claim. Varrika and Merrin threw themselves flat against the precarious ledge, the dwarf woman's injured ankle screaming in agony as she twisted to avoid being struck by falling debris. The sound of rushing water grew louder with terrifying speed, now lapping at their boots instead of merely dripping through cracks in the ancient stone.
Varikka gritted her teeth against the pain, swinging her crowbar in a wide arc to deflect another of the Guardian's attacks. The creature's unnatural heart pulsed with eerie light, casting grotesque shadows across the rapidly flooding chamber. "Go!" she snarled at Merrin, voice strained by agony and effort. "Find us a way out while I keep this thing busy!"
Merrin hesitated for barely a second—time enough to see Varikka's face contorted with pain, the dwarf woman's usual iron control cracking under the strain of her injuries. Then she was moving, half-climbing, half-stumbling along the narrowing ledge as water surged upwards from below. Every instinct screamed at her to help fight, but logic won out: Varrika needed Merrin to find them a path to safety, not another wounded body to drag out.
The rising waters lapped higher, ice-cold and relentless, soaking through their boots and into the stone beneath. Somewhere in the churning depths below, shapes moved—too large for rats, too swift for debris. Merrin's heart hammered against her ribs as she scanned the crumbling walls for any sign of an exit. The water was already ankle-deep, climbing steadily towards knee-height. They had minutes at best before the current became impossible to fight.
