Round 468 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The water level continues to rise, lapping at Varikka's thighs as she scans the passage ahead for any other potential obstacles or dangers. Merrin edges forward through the water, her crowbar held at the ready, as she calls out, "Varikka, keep an eye on the rock barrier! If it gives way, we'll be swept away!" The Guardian's clanking metal on stone grows louder, closer, and more insistent, a grim reminder that time is running out. Suddenly, a jagged rock juts out from the wall, partially blocking the flow of water. Merrin spots it and swiftly gestures for Varikka to follow, their eyes locking as they take a cautious step forward together, the water swirling around their ankles.
I hold my breath as I edge closer to the jagged rock jutting from the wall, the water swirling around my ankles. It's a small victory, but any obstacle that slows the flood is welcome right now. I catch Varikka's eye and give her a nod, hoping the gesture conveys both gratitude and urgency. We can't afford to let our guard down, not with the Guardian closing in and the water rising higher with each passing second. As we move together through the narrowing passage, I keep my crowbar at the ready, my eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement or danger. The air is thick with the scent of decay and the faint, pulsing glow of ancient runes, casting eerie shadows across the chamber. I can feel the cold seeping into my bones, making my muscles ache and my thoughts sluggish. But there's no time for weakness or fear - we have to keep moving if we want to survive. Suddenly, a loud crack echoes through the passage, followed by the ominous rumble of shifting stone. I whirl around, my heart leaping into my throat as I see the rock barrier we wedged in place begin to shift and wobble. "Varikka!" I shout, my voice strained with urgency. "The barrier's giving way! We need to move now!"
I lunge forward, my crowbar raised high as I try to brace myself against the onslaught of water rushing towards us. Varikka grits her teeth, bracing herself as best she can on her good leg. Together, we push our way through the narrowing passage, the water swirling around our knees and threatening to sweep us off our feet at any moment. As we round a bend in the tunnel, I spot a faint glimmer of light in the distance, barely visible through the darkness and the rising flood. It's a slim hope, but it's all we have right now. "There!" I call out, pointing towards the light with my free hand. "If we can just make it to that opening, maybe we'll find another way out or a better vantage point to fight from."
I glance back over my shoulder, my eyes straining through the darkness for any sign of the Guardian's approach. The clanking of metal on stone grows louder with each passing second, a grim reminder that time is running out. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what lies ahead. "Varikka," I hiss urgently, "we need to keep moving. The Guardian is getting closer, and this flood isn't going to slow down anytime soon. But if we work together, maybe we can find a way to survive this."
I don't know if my words are true or just desperate bravado - but right now, in the face of certain death, I'll take any glimmer of hope I can get. With a final surge of strength, I push forward through the water, my crowbar held high and my eyes fixed on the faint light ahead. We have to keep moving, no matter how daunting the odds seem. It's our only chance of survival now.
