Merrin pressed herself flat against the stone wall, her heart pounding in her chest as she felt the cold water swirling around her ankles. The air here smelled different somehow, older and mustier than the main chamber they'd just fled. She could hear Varikka's heavy breathing behind her, punctuated by small groans of pain each time the dwarf woman shifted her weight on her sprained ankle.

"What do you see?" Varikka called out, her voice strained with effort and fear. "Is there another way out?"

Merrin squinted into the darkness ahead, trying to make out any details in the gloom. The passage stretched out before them, narrow and low-ceilinged, with ancient runes carved into the walls at regular intervals. She could feel the water level rising slowly but steadily, already halfway up her calf in this section.

"Can't see much," she called back softly. "But the water's coming in fast here too. We need to move."

She glanced behind them, where the passage they'd just squeezed through was now completely flooded. The waters churned and swirled around the spot where Varikka had been trapped moments earlier, and Merrin could see dark shapes moving beneath the surface—creatures of some kind, she realized with a shiver.

"Varikka," she said, her voice tight with urgency, "I don't think we can stay here. The water's already up to my knees, and those things in the water... I don't like the look of them."

The dwarf woman shifted her weight again, wincing as pain shot through her ankle. "I know," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I can hardly walk on this foot, let alone run. How are we supposed to outpace whatever's coming if we can't even move properly?"

Merrin bit her lip, considering their options. The sound of collapsing stone grew louder behind them, and she could feel the vibrations through the soles of her boots. They needed to keep moving, but with Varikka injured and the rising waters complicating everything...

"I've got an idea," she said finally, turning back to face her friend. "We need to get you off that ankle somehow. If we can fashion some kind of splint or support..."

Varikka nodded slowly, her expression a mix of pain and resignation. "Do what you can, Merrin. But make it quick—we don't have much time."

Merrin knew she was right. The water was already lapping at the bottoms of their packs, and those shapes in the water were getting closer. They needed to act fast, or they might find themselves trapped here with no way out.

She reached for her pack, fumbling through its contents until she found what she was looking for—a length of rope and some spare cloth. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.

"Here," she said, approaching Varikka carefully. "Lean on me while I wrap this around your ankle. It won't be perfect, but it might take some of the weight off."

Varikka nodded grimly and shifted her weight onto Merrin's shoulder, gritting her teeth against the pain. The halfling woman worked quickly, wrapping the cloth tightly around the swollen joint and securing it with lengths of rope.

"There," she said finally, stepping back to examine her handiwork. "It's not ideal, but it should help. Now let's get moving before this place floods completely."

Together, they turned their attention to the dark passage ahead, the sound of rushing water and collapsing stone urging them onward. The rising waters lapped at their legs as they began to move, each step a reminder of the precariousness of their situation.

Merrin knew they were far from safe, but for now, at least, they were moving. And in this moment, that was all that mattered.
