Round 466 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Varika's injured ankle throbs in pain as she stumbles, her balance precarious on the jagged rocks and loose debris scattered about. Merrin catches her by the elbow, steadying her. "We need to find a way to slow down the floodwaters!" Varika cries out, her voice laced with desperation. As she speaks, the water level continues to rise, lapping at their knees. The air is thick with the scent of decay, and ancient runes etched into the stone walls pulse with an eerie energy, casting flickering shadows across the chamber. Suddenly, a loud creaking sound echoes through the passage, followed by the ominous rumble of shifting stone. A large boulder tumbles down the slope, narrowly missing Merrin and Varika. The rock crashes into the water, causing a small wave to crash against them, forcing them to hold their ground. The passageway behind them begins to collapse, rocks tumbling down the slope as the wall slides open wider. Varika's eyes widen with fear as she realizes they have only minutes to find a way out before the entire passage is consumed by water.
I grip my crowbar tighter, knuckles bone-white, as I watch another boulder tumble down the slope and crash into the rising waters. The wave it creates crashes against us, chilling me to the bone and forcing us both back. "Varikka, we need to find something to block this flow now or we're going to get washed away!" I yell over the roar of the flood, my voice ragged with desperation. My eyes dart around wildly, searching for anything we might use as a makeshift dam. The faint glow from deeper in the passage does little to illuminate our precarious position, casting eerie shadows that dance across the walls. I spot a large, flat rock wedged against the wall and point it out to Varikka. "There! If we can pry that loose and wedge it diagonally across the passage, it might slow the flow enough for us to get through."
I move towards the rock, my movements cautious and deliberate as I try to maintain my balance on the slippery stones. The water is now lapping at my thighs, its icy touch seeping into my travel leathers and making my legs ache with cold. I plant my feet firmly and grip the crowbar with both hands, bracing myself against the rock. "Varikka, get ready to help me lift this thing once I've got it loose," I call over my shoulder. "And watch your step - the last thing we need is for you to twist that ankle even worse!"
With a grunt of effort, I begin to lever the crowbar under the edge of the rock, my muscles straining as I try to prize it free from its resting place. The seconds tick by with agonizing slowness, each one bringing the water closer and making our chances of escape that much more precarious. But there's no time for fear or doubt now - only the desperate hope that we can find a way out before the tunnel becomes our tomb.
I grit my teeth against the pain in my ankle as Merrin struggles to pry loose the rock. The water is rising fast now, lapping at my thighs and threatening to sweep me off my feet. I can feel the cold seeping into my bones, making my muscles ache and my thoughts sluggish. But there's no time for weakness or fear - we have to get out of here before the entire passage is consumed by the flood. "Merrin, hurry!" I call out, my voice strained with effort as I try to brace myself against the wall. "We don't have much time left!" I can see the desperation in her eyes as she heaves against the crowbar, muscles straining and sweat beading on her brow. The rock shifts slightly under her efforts, but it's not enough. We need to work together if we want to have any chance of survival. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I'm about to do. Then, with a grunt of pain, I lunge forward and grab hold of the crowbar beside Merrin. Together, we heave against the rock, our combined strength finally managing to prize it free from its resting place. It's heavy, far heavier than either of us expected, but there's no time to rest now. "On three," I pant, bracing myself as best I can on my good leg. "One... two... three!" With a final burst of effort, we lift the rock and angle it diagonally across the passage, wedging it tight against the opposite wall. The flow of water slows momentarily as it's forced to navigate around the obstacle, but we both know it won't last long. "There!" Merrin exclaims, her voice a mixture of relief and exhaustion. "That should give us a little more time."
I nod grimly, already scanning ahead for any other potential obstacles or dangers. The passage ahead is dark and treacherous, littered with jagged rocks and loose debris. But it's our only chance of escape now.
