Round 453 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As we slide down the incline, our footsteps echo off the stone walls. The luminescent crystals cast an eerie glow over the chamber, making it hard to discern friend from foe. The shadowy figures close in, their eyes fixed on us with unbridled hunger. We land hard on a rocky surface, skinning our knees in the process. Varikka's mace goes flying from her hand, but I manage to scoop it up, clutching it tightly as I struggle to my feet. The Guardian is now mere feet behind us, its roar echoing off the walls as it bursts into the chamber. New detail: As we scramble to our feet, we notice that the rocky surface beneath us is slick with moisture, making every step precarious. Immediate pressure: With the Guardian closing in, we need to find a stable footing and decide how to proceed. We glance around, taking in the chamber's layout, as the shadowy figures draw closer, their claws snapping hungrily.
I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as we land hard on the rocky surface, skinning our knees in the process. The air is thick with the scent of decay, and I can hear the Guardian's roar echoing off the walls, growing closer with each passing moment. Varikka stumbles beside me, her injured ankle protesting every step, but there's no time to stop and assess the damage. I glance around quickly, taking in the layout of the chamber. The luminescent crystals embedded in the walls cast an eerie glow over everything, making it hard to discern friend from foe. But as my eyes adjust to the darkness, I can see that we're not alone. Shadowy figures emerge from the corners of the chamber, their forms twisting and shifting in the flickering light of the crystals. They move towards us with a predatory grace, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly hunger. I can feel the ground beneath my feet growing slick with moisture, making every step precarious. But as I turn to face the approaching figures, I realize that we're trapped between them and the Guardian, which is now mere feet behind us. "Varikka," I hiss, grabbing her arm and pulling her close. "We need to move. Now."
Together, we stumble forward, our footsteps echoing off the stone walls as we race towards the passageway. The air is thick with the scent of decay, and I can feel my lungs burning as I suck in each desperate breath. But as we round a corner, I see it - a massive stone door, looming before us like a monolith from another age. "Look!" I shout to Varikka, pointing towards the opening. "There might be a way out!"
But before we can take a step forward, the ground beneath us gives way once more, and we find ourselves sliding down another steep incline. This time, we land hard, skinning our knees on the rough stone. Varikka's mace goes flying from her hand, but I manage to scoop it up, clutching it tightly as I struggle to my feet. The shadowy figures are close now, their eyes fixed on us with unbridled hunger. "Go!" I shout to Varikka, shoving her towards the opening. "I'll hold them off!"
I raise my crossbow, taking aim at the Guardian's head as it lumbers towards me. The bolt flies true, striking the creature square in the eye with a sickening crunch. But it barely slows the beast, and I can see that it's gaining ground with each passing moment. "Merrin!" Varikka shouts from the other side of the door. "Hurry!"
I take one last look at the Guardian, my heart pounding in my chest. Then, with a final burst of speed, I dive through the gap, rolling to my feet on the other side just as the creature's claws scrape against the stone where I had been standing mere moments before. For a moment, we stand there, panting and gasping for breath as we try to gather our wits. The door behind us is sealed tight, the Guardian's roars muffled but still audible from the other side. We made it, but where are we now?
