As the creature's shadow flits across the stone walls, Varikka freezes, her grip on her mace tightening. The rustling grows louder, and Merrin readies her crossbow, her eyes fixed on the spot where the creature was last seen. Suddenly, a low, guttural growl echoes through the tunnel, making Varikka's heart skip a beat. Varikka's injured ankle protests as she shifts her weight, but she holds firm, her mace at the ready. Merrin's eyes dart towards the tunnel entrance, where the rising floodwaters are now visible, the surface of the water lapping at their feet. The Guardian's approach is getting closer, and the ground beneath them is growing increasingly unstable. The creature's movement stops just a few feet away, and for a moment, there's silence. Then, without warning, it scurries forward, its eyes glowing in the dark. Varikka takes a step back, her mace at the ready, while Merrin readies her crossbow, her finger tightening on the trigger.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I hold my breath as the creature skitters closer, its eyes glowing in the darkness. My finger tightens on the trigger of my crossbow, ready to loose a bolt at the slightest provocation. But something about the way it moves gives me pause. It's small, no more than the size of a rat, but there's an intelligence in its movements that I don't expect. I glance at Varikka, who is poised to strike with her mace, and shake my head slightly. "Wait," I mouth silently, hoping she understands. The creature comes to a stop just a few feet away from us, its nose twitching as it sniffs the air. I can see now that it's some kind of rodent, its fur matted and covered in dirt and grime. But there's something else about it too, something that sets it apart from the other creatures we've encountered in this place. I take a step forward, my crossbow still trained on the creature, but I don't fire. Instead, I reach into my pocket with my free hand and pull out a small piece of dried meat, holding it out towards the rodent. "Here, little one," I whisper, my voice barely audible over the sound of the rising floodwaters behind us. "Come and get it."

The creature's eyes lock onto the meat, and for a moment, it seems to hesitate. Then, with a quick flick of its head, it scampers forward, snatching the morsel from my hand before darting back into the shadows. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, my finger easing off the trigger of my crossbow. "It's just a rat," I say to Varikka, my voice still hushed. "But keep your guard up. We don't know what else might be lurking in these tunnels."

I take another step forward, my eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of movement. The tunnel seems to stretch on forever, a narrow slit in the stone that leads deeper into the earth. But there's no choice but to press on. "Come on," I say to Varikka, gesturing for her to follow me. "We need to keep moving if we're going to find a way out of here."

I take another step forward, my crossbow at the ready, and pray that whatever else this place holds in store for us, it won't be anything worse than a few frightened rats.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I watch the small creature scamper away, my heart still pounding in my chest. Merrin's right, of course - it's just a rat, and we have bigger problems to worry about than some frightened rodent. But something about the way it moved, the intelligence in its eyes, gives me pause. I shake my head, trying to clear the thoughts from my mind. We need to keep moving if we're going to find a way out of this place. I take a step forward, my injured ankle protesting the movement, but I ignore the pain. Merrin's already moving ahead, her crossbow at the ready, scanning the darkness for any sign of danger. I follow close behind, my mace gripped tightly in my hand, my eyes darting from side to side as we make our way deeper into the tunnel. The air grows thicker with each step, the musty scent of old stone and decay filling my nostrils. The sound of the rising floodwaters echoes behind us, a constant reminder of the danger that lurks just around the corner. I can feel the weight of the tunnel pressing down on me from all sides, the walls seeming to close in with each passing moment. But we have no choice but to press on. Merrin's ahead, her rogue's senses on high alert, and I trust her to keep us safe. For now, at least. As long as we stay together, stay vigilant, there's a chance we might just make it out of this alive. I take another step forward, my muscles coiled and ready for whatever challenges this place might throw our way. The future is uncertain, the path ahead unclear, but one thing I know for sure: I won't let anything stop me from finding a way out of here. Not even the darkness itself.
