Round 442 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin and Varikka catch their breath in the cramped ventilation shaft, the sound of rushing water grows louder. The metal floor beneath them seems to vibrate with the force of the floodwaters, making it difficult for Varikka to put weight on her injured ankle. Suddenly, the air is filled with a faint gurgling noise, and the water level rises even higher, threatening to engulf them entirely. A narrow grate above them creaks ominously, and a small chunk of metal falls into the water below, clattering against the stone floor. The Guardian's roar echoes through the shaft once more, its hot breath washing over them as it tries to follow. Merrin's grip on Varikka's arm tightens as she looks up at the grate, her eyes locked on the rusty handle that might be their only hope for escape.
As Merrin peers up at the grate above them, her heart races. The water level is rising rapidly, and she knows they don't have much time left before it engulfs them completely. She reaches out, her fingers grasping for the rusty handle of the grate. "Varikka," Merrin whispers urgently, "I need your help to push this open. Can you give me a boost?"
Varikka nods, her face pale with pain but determined. "Just tell me what to do."
Merrin takes a deep breath, steadying herself against the wall of the ventilation shaft. "Alright, on the count of three, I want you to lift me up as high as you can. Think you can manage that?"
Varikka meets her gaze, a spark of resolve in her eyes. "I'll manage. Just don't let us fall."
"Three... two... one..." Merrin counts, and Varikka pushes her upwards with all her remaining strength. Merrin reaches out, her fingers closing around the handle of the grate. With a grunt of effort, she pulls, feeling the metal groan and creak as it slowly gives way. The grate swings open with a rusty screech, revealing a narrow opening above them. Merrin hauls herself up, her muscles burning from the exertion, and reaches down to help Varikka climb out after her. Together, they collapse onto the hard stone floor, gasping for breath as the sound of rushing water fades away behind them. Merrin looks around, taking in their surroundings. They're in a small, dimly lit chamber, with a narrow passageway leading off into the darkness ahead. The air is thick with the scent of damp stone and the faint, underlying tang of rot.
Merrin, I can't thank you enough for getting us out of there alive. My ankle is in agony but at least we're no longer drowning.
