As Varikka and Merrin venture deeper into the hidden passage, they notice the air grows colder and the darkness seems to press in around them. The sound of rushing water fades behind them, replaced by an oppressive silence that feels like a physical presence. Suddenly, Varikka's injured ankle gives way, causing her to cry out in pain as she stumbles. The ground beneath them begins to shift, and the walls start to close in, revealing a hidden mechanism that triggers a section of the passage to fill with a noxious gas. The air fills with a choking mist, making it difficult for them to see or breathe. Varikka's face contorts in agony as she tries to stand, but Merrin quickly grabs her arm, holding her steady. "We need to find a way out of here, now!" he shouts above the din of the gas. The passage is collapsing, and they're running out of time. The Guardian's voice echoes through the mist, its tone dripping with malevolent glee: "You fools...you'll never escape..."

As Merrin's eyes water from the noxious gas filling the air, she can barely make out Varikka's form through the haze. The sound of crumbling stone echoes through the passage, sending shivers down her spine. With a sudden surge of panic, Merrin reaches for Varikka, pulling her close as the walls begin to close in around them.

"Varikka!" Merrin cries out, her voice hoarse from the effort of breathing through the thick mist. "We need to move, now!"

She can feel Varikka's weight pressing against her, the other woman's body trembling with pain and exhaustion. Merrin's mind races as she tries to think of a way out, a path through this nightmare that seems to have no end.

As they stumble forward, Merrin's foot catches on something hidden in the shadows. She lets out a yelp of surprise as she falls forward, her hands scrambling for purchase on the slick stones. Varikka's weight shifts, and for a moment, Merrin fears they both will tumble to the ground.

But with a burst of strength born of desperation, Merrin rights herself, pulling Varikka along with her. The sound of rushing water echoes through the passage once more, a reminder of the time they're running out.

As they move deeper into the hidden passage, Merrin can feel the walls pressing in around them, the crushing weight of the stone bearing down from above. She wants to scream, to lash out at the injustice of it all, but she knows that would be futile. They are trapped, and the only way out is forward.

With a deep breath, Merrin pushes on, her hand gripping Varikka's arm tightly as they stumble through the shadows. The sound of the Guardian's voice fades behind them, but the memory of its malevolent glee lingers, a constant reminder of the dangers that lie ahead.

And so they venture deeper into the unknown, their hearts heavy with the knowledge that whatever lies ahead, it will not be easy. But Merrin knows that they must keep moving, must find a way out of this cursed place before it's too late.
