The sound of grinding gears filled the chamber as the massive stone door at the dais slowly slid open, revealing a dimly lit corridor beyond. The water pressure gauge on the wall fell silent, and the ground stopped its trembling. Varikka's grip on her mace tightened, her eyes wide with both relief and apprehension.

Merrin crouched low, her mace at the ready as she watched the massive stone door slowly slide open before them. The sound of grinding gears and scraping metal filled the chamber, echoing off the thick stone walls. Varikka, she hissed, stay a...

Before Merrin could finish her warning, the floor beneath their feet gave way with a sickening crack. The halfling let out a startled yelp as she fell, tumbling head over heels into the darkness below. A moment later, Varikka followed, her own cry of surprise echoing in Merrin's ears as they plummeted into the waiting pit trap. The impact was brutal, the two women landing in a tangled heap at the bottom of the pit, weapons scattering across the stone floor.

For a moment, neither moved, stunned by the fall. Then Varikka groaned, her injured ankle sending a fresh wave of pain through her leg as she tried to push herself up. Merrin? she called out, her voice echoing off the damp walls. Are you alright? She heard a soft groan from beside her and felt a wave of relief wash over her. At least they were both alive.

Varikka turned her head to look at Merrin, her vision compromised by blood and grime in her eyes. The halfling lay motionless for a moment longer before slowly pushing herself up, her own body aching from the fall. What now? They were trapped at the bottom of a pit, injured, and with no clear way out. And the sound of rushing water was growing louder by the second.

Merrin's voice came to her through the darkness, strained but steady. Varikka? Are you hurt? The concern in her tone, mixed with an undercurrent of fear, was evident. You're limping. I can hear it in your step. What happened?
