Phase: escalating

The sound of rushing water grew louder with each passing second, a menacing roar that seemed to vibrate through the very stone beneath their feet. Merrin’s eyes darted around the rapidly collapsing tunnel, searching for any alternative route as she helped Varikka navigate the treacherous footing. The dwarf woman's face was pale and drawn, her breathing labored from exertion and fear.
“We need to find another way out of here before this whole place comes down on top of us!” Merrin exclaimed, her voice barely carrying over the cacophony of crumbling stone and surging water. She could feel the ground shaking more violently now, each tremor sending fresh cascades of rubble tumbling from above.
Varikka nodded grimly, her good hand gripping her mace tighter as she moved forward with agonizing slowness. “I’m with you, little one,” she grunted, wincing as her injured ankle protested every step. “But I don’t see any other way through this mess.”
Merrin’s rogue eyes spotted a narrow crevice in the far wall, barely visible behind a curtain of falling rock. “There!” she pointed urgently. “We can try to squeeze through that gap before the whole tunnel collapses!”
The two women exchanged a quick look - one of mutual desperation and shared determination. They had faced dangers together before, but never anything quite like this. The very air seemed alive with the groaning of stressed stone and the roar of approaching water.
With no other options visible, they began to make their way carefully toward the crevice, each step a calculated risk on the shifting, crumbling ground. The tunnel walls seemed to close in around them as they advanced, rubble cascading down with increasing frequency and force. Merrin’s heart pounded in her chest, adrenaline fueling her movements even as her mind raced through potential escape routes.
As they drew closer to the gap, a particularly loud crack echoed through the chamber. Both women froze instinctively, watching in horror as a massive section of the ceiling above them gave way. A boulder the size of a horse came crashing down, mere feet away from where they stood.
There was no time to think. Acting on pure reflex, Merrin threw herself against Varikka’s side, driving both of them sideways just as the boulder hit the ground with a thunderous crash. The impact sent a shower of stone fragments exploding outward, several striking Merrin’s back and shoulders with stinging force.
They landed in a heap on the unstable ground, gasping for breath. For a moment, they lay there, hearts pounding, as the dust settled around them. The near-miss had been terrifyingly close - another few seconds and they would have been crushed beneath the falling rock.
But their brief reprieve was shattered by the sound of rushing water growing even louder. Merrin looked up to see a massive section of the tunnel wall giving way, revealing the full fury of the flood below. Water came surging through the breach like a liquid avalanche, filling the chamber with terrifying speed.
“We need to move NOW!” Merrin shouted, scrambling to her feet and pulling Varikka upright with desperate strength. The rising water was already lapping at their boots, cold and fast-moving as it sought to fill every available space in the collapsing tunnel.
Their only hope lay in reaching that narrow crevice before the flood consumed them both. With adrenaline surging through her veins, Merrin half-dragged, half-pulled Varikka forward, ignoring the protests of her own battered body as they fought against time itself.
