Phase: escalating

The stone corridor seemed to groan around them, ancient masonry complaining under the strain of centuries of neglect. Merrin pressed herself against the wall, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched the Guardian prepare its next attack. The air crackled with electricity, ozone stinging her nostrils, and she knew they had mere seconds before the creature unleashed another devastating bolt.
"Varikka!" Merrin shouted, her voice echoing off the damp stone walls. She lunged forward, fingers outstretched, desperate to reach the fighter before the Guardian could strike again. But as she closed the distance between them, a fresh wave of dark energy erupted from the creature's form, washing over both women like a physical blow.
Merrin staggered back, gasping for breath as the magical force slammed into her. She felt it pressing against her skin, seeping into her bones, threatening to tear her apart from the inside out. But even as the pain mounted, she refused to give up. With a surge of strength born of desperation, she pushed herself upright once more, her dagger still clutched tightly in her hand.
Varrika, meanwhile, found herself rooted to the spot, the dark energy holding her in place with inexorable force. She tried to resist, muscles straining against the invisible bonds, but it was like trying to move a mountain with her bare hands. The fighter's eyes widened as Merrin charged forward, her friend's desperate bravery both inspiring and terrifying.
"Merrin!" Varrika cried out, her voice barely audible over the crackling of the Guardian's power. She knew it was a futile gesture - what could she do, trapped and helpless like this? But even as panic threatened to overwhelm her, a spark of defiance flared in her chest. She wouldn't let Merrin die here, not after everything they'd been through together.
The Guardian loomed over them both now, its robes billowing outward as it prepared to deliver the final blow. Merrin knew she had to act fast if they were going to survive this encounter. She glanced around the room, searching for any weapon or tool that might help them break free from the energy field.
