Phase: escalating

The small leather-bound book slammed shut with a sudden force that made both women jump, its pages fluttering wildly as if caught in an unseen wind. The air crackled with electricity, charged and tense, and Varikka instinctively raised her heavy mace, muscles coiled tight, dark eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement or threat.
But before they could even exchange a word or react further, a faint hum began to fill the chamber, low at first but rapidly growing louder. The sound vibrated through the stone floor beneath their feet, making it difficult to stand steady, and Merrin's free hand shot out to brace against the wall for balance. The humming grew into a deep, resonant thrum that seemed to come from everywhere at once, and then—the walls began to crack.
Fissures spiderwebbed across the stone in an instant, dust pouring down like snow as the very structure of the ancient tower groaned and shifted around them. A chunk of stone the size of Merrin's fist suddenly broke free from the ceiling above their heads, tumbling past them with a sharp clatter that made both women flinch back instinctively.
"Varikka!" Merrin shouted, her voice barely carrying over the growing cacophony of cracking stone and groaning timbers. "We need to move—now! The whole damn place is coming down!"
The ground beneath their feet heaved again, and a fresh crack shot across the floor mere inches from where they stood. Merrin's ankle screamed in protest as she tried to shift her weight away from the spreading fissure, pain lancing up her leg with every movement. But there was no time to worry about her own injuries—they needed to find higher ground, or at least clear space, before the entire chamber collapsed around them.
"Over here!" Varikka called out, pointing to a section of wall that looked slightly more stable than the crumbling mess surrounding them. "We can brace against this—at least until we figure out what's happening!"
Merrin nodded, gritting her teeth against the pain as she half-hopped, half-stumbled towards Varikka's position. The floor bucked again, sending a fresh wave of agony through her twisted ankle, but she pushed through it, driven by pure adrenaline and the desperate need to reach solid ground.
As they reached the relatively stable section of wall, another massive crack split the ceiling directly above them, and a cascade of stone and dust came raining down. Merrin threw herself forward, wrapping her arms around Varikka's waist and pulling them both flat against the vibrating surface as chunks of masonry bounced and skittered across the floor mere feet away.
The thunderous roar of collapsing stone filled the chamber, drowning out all other sound for several long seconds. When it finally subsided into a groaning rumble, Merrin lifted her head cautiously, heart pounding, to survey the devastation.
The once-stable passage had transformed into a nightmare of crumbling walls and gaping holes. In the center of the chaos, where their path had been moments before, a massive section of floor had simply given way, leaving a yawning chasm that revealed churning water far below—a new underground river fed by the?. The water was already rising with terrifying speed, lapping at the edges of what remained and clearly intent on consuming everything in its path.
"By the Goddess..." Varikka breathed, her voice barely audible over the rushing sound of the water. "What in all the hells is happening?"
Merrin could only shake her head, her mind racing as she tried to process the situation. The entire chamber was doomed—the rising water would flood everything within minutes, and the structural collapse showed no signs of stopping. They needed to find a way out, fast, or they'd be trapped in an underwater tomb.
But even as that terrifying reality sank in, Merrin's eyes widened with fresh horror as she spotted something moving in the swirling dust and debris near the newly formed chasm. Two glowing eyes, then four, then more—creatures emerging from the chaos, their forms indistinct but unmistakably alive and heading towards them.
"Varikka," Merrin said, her voice tight with fear, "we have company. And I don't think they're friendly."
Merrin
