Phase: escalating

The water surged again, threatening to sweep them both away as they clung to the crumbling ledge. Merrin's fingers scrabbled at the slick stonework, searching desperately for any sign of a hidden switch or pressure plate that might offer salvation from the rising flood. The cold water lapped at her boots, and she could feel the current tugging insistently at her legs. "I don't see anything!" she called out, her voice tight with panic as she strained to see through the dim light. The ledge creaked ominously beneath her feet, and she could feel the ground shuddering with each passing second.
Varikka's grip on Merrin's arm tightened as another surge of water threatened to tear them apart. "Stay close!" she shouted over the roar of rushing water. The dwarf woman's eyes darted around, searching for any sign of a way out or upward, but the walls rose sheer and unbroken above them.
Merrin took a deep breath, trying to steady herself against the rising panic. The creatures' glowing eyes were closer now, their forms barely visible in the gloom as they drew nearer through the water. She could feel the ground shifting beneath her feet with each surge of the flood.
"We have to do something!" Merrin gasped, her fingers still scrabbling at the stonework. "There has to be a way out of here!"
Varikka nodded grimly, already scanning their surroundings for any sign of an escape route or hidden mechanism. The water was rising fast now, and they both knew that if it reached chest height, they'd be powerless against its current.
The ledge creaked again, louder this time, and a shower of small stones pattered down from above. Merrin looked up to see the ceiling beginning to crumble, great chunks of rock falling into the water with massive splashes. "Varikka!" she screamed, pointing upward. "The whole place is coming down!"
The dwarf woman's eyes widened as she watched the ceiling begin to collapse in earnest. Great slabs of stone were breaking free now, tumbling downward with increasing speed and force. The water surged violently as each rock hit the surface, spraying foam and mist into the air.
"We have to move!" Varikka shouted, hauling Merrin bodily away from the collapsing section of ceiling. They stumbled across the ledge, the ground shifting dangerously beneath their feet as more and more stone gave way above them.
Merrin's injured leg screamed in protest as she was dragged along, but she ignored the pain, driven by pure adrenaline and the need to survive. The water was already waist-deep now, swirling treacherously around them as it rose with terrifying speed.
They reached a relatively stable section of ledge just as a massive slab of stone came crashing down mere feet away, sending up a towering wall of water that threatened to wash them both off their precarious perch. Merrin clung to Varikka for dear life, her heart pounding in her chest as they rode out the surge.
As the water subsided slightly, they looked around, panting and disoriented. The chamber was transforming rapidly, great chunks of ceiling and wall collapsing into the rising flood below. The creatures had retreated, their glowing eyes barely visible now through the mist and spray.
"We have to find higher ground!" Merrin gasped, her teeth chattering from cold and fear. "Quickly, before we're swept away!"
Varikka nodded, already scanning their options. The ledge they stood on was crumbling fast, great chunks of stone breaking away with each passing second. But across the chamber, she could see a narrow staircase leading upward—if it hadn't collapsed yet.
"Over there!" she pointed, her voice barely audible over the roar of rushing water and collapsing stone. "The stairs!"
Merrin nodded, her eyes fixed on the precarious-looking structure. It was their only chance, and they had to take it now before the entire chamber came down around them.
They moved as one, splashing through the chest-deep water toward the stairs. The current fought against them every step of the way, trying to pull them off balance and sweep them into the?.
