Round 328

Phase: escalating

The water surged forward with terrifying speed, cold and relentless against their boots. Merrin felt her injured leg protest as she pushed herself upright, but Varikka needed her functional right now - the dwarf woman was pinned beneath a massive stone slab, barely able to move, let alone extract herself. The sound of rushing liquid grew louder by the second, ominous and insistent. "Up," Merrin hissed, scanning the chamber walls desperately. "There's gotta be an up route somewhere!" Her eyes landed on a narrow ledge running along the far wall, just above the waterline. It was a long shot, but it was something. She pointed. "There! Move your asses!"
The adrenaline surge masked some of the pain in her leg for now, but she knew it wouldn't last. Every second counted - Varikka needed to get clear before that thing reached her, and Merrin wasn't about to let her friend die down here alone. She started forward, limping heavily but determined. "Stay close!" Merrin called back over the roar of water filling the chamber. "We stick together through this shit!" The cold water swirled around her ankles now, and she could feel the vibrations through the stone underfoot, ominous and growing stronger.
Varikka's voice came back, strained but steady. "On it," the dwarf woman replied, her movements already showing signs of exhaustion. Merrin knew Varikka was running on fumes - the fight with the tentacled horror had taken its toll, not to mention being crushed under a falling slab. But they didn't have time for weakness right now. The water was already lapping at their boots, cold and insistent, and the sound of rushing liquid grew louder by the second.
Merrin felt a surge of fear as she realized just how precarious their situation had become. They were trapped in an ancient, unstable chamber with rising waters and no clear escape route - and to make matters worse, they'd lost Seraphine somewhere in the chaos. The thought of her friend out there alone, injured or worse, sent a fresh wave of panic through Merrin's chest. But she pushed it down, focusing on the immediate problem at hand.
"Varikka," she called out, her voice tight with concern. "How bad is your wrist? Can you climb?" The dwarf woman's response came back after a moment, equally strained. "It hurts like hell, but I can manage. Just... give me a second." Merrin watched as Varikka struggled to her feet, the effort clearly costing her dearly. Her friend was battered and bruised, covered in grime and blood from their ordeal - but she was alive, and that was what mattered most.
"Alright," Merrin said, trying to keep her voice steady despite the rising water around them. "Let's get you up onto that ledge. We can figure out our next move once we're clear of this flood." She moved closer to Varikka, offering a supporting arm despite her own injured leg. The dwarf woman hesitated for just a moment before grasping Merrin's offered support, and together they began the treacherous climb toward higher ground.
The water continued to rise as they ascended, cold and insistent against their boots. Merrin could feel the vibrations through the stone underfoot, ominous and growing stronger with each passing second. They needed to move faster - but every step was a struggle with her injured leg screaming protest. Still, she gritted her teeth and pushed on, determined to get Varikka to safety no matter what it took.
As they reached the ledge at last, Merrin felt a wave of relief wash over her. They were clear of the rising water for now - but she knew this was far from over. The chamber was still unstable, the structure groaning ominously around them, and somewhere out there in the darkness lay Seraphine... and possibly worse things besides. But at least Varikka was safe for now. And that, Merrin thought as she helped her friend onto solid ground, was worth fighting through any pain or fear.
"Alright," she said, collapsing against the wall beside Varikka with a groan. "Let's catch our breath before we figure out what the hell comes next." The dwarf woman nodded, leaning back against the stone with a weary sigh. "Agreed," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "But we need to find Seraphine fast - and hope this place doesn't come down around our ears before we do."
Merrin felt a fresh surge of determination at Varikka's words. Her friend was right - they couldn't afford to rest for long, not with the constant threat of collapse looming over them. But first things first: they needed to treat their injuries and regroup before pushing on into whatever dangers awaited them next. With a deep breath, Merrin began rummaging through her pack for bandages and healing supplies, already planning their next move in her mind.
"Here," she said, passing some bandages to Varikka. "Wrap that wrist tight - we don't need it giving out on us mid-climb." The dwarf woman nodded gratefully, beginning to tend to her injury as Merrin attended to her own leg wound. The cold water had helped numb the pain somewhat, but now that they were relatively safe for the moment, she could feel every ache and bruise from their harrowing escape.
As they worked in silence, Merrin's mind raced with possibilities and concerns. They'd come so far already - faced dangers beyond imagining, overcome obstacles that should have killed them a dozen times over. But this... this felt different somehow. More personal. More urgent. The thought of Seraphine out there alone, injured or worse...
No, she wouldn't let herself think like that. They'd find their friend - had to find her. And until then, they'd face whatever came next together, just like always. With a final nod to Varikka, Merrin pushed herself back to her feet, ignoring the protest from her injured leg. "Alright," she said, her voice firm despite the lingering pain. "Let's go find our girl and get the hell out of this cursed place."
