Round 314 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin and Varikka catch their breath on the ledge, they hear the sound of the chamber's entrance collapsing behind them. The roar of the falling stone and debris grows louder, and the ground shudders beneath their feet. Suddenly, a loud splash echoes from the water below, followed by a faint scratching sound against the stone floor. Merrin looks down at Varikka's wrist, where the rope is still tied. "We need to cut that rope now," she says, her voice firm with urgency. Varikka nods, her eyes scanning the ledge for a suitable tool. "I think I can use my crossbow bolt to cut it," she says, carefully examining the rope. Merrin hands her the bolt, and Varikka carefully drives it into the rope, severing it with a satisfying crunch. As the rope falls to the water below, the tentacled horror suddenly lunges forward, its long, whip-like tentacles whipping towards Varikka. The ledge beneath them begins to shake violently, and Merrin knows that they can't hold out for much longer. The ground shudders ominously, threatening to send them tumbling into the churning waters below.
I crouch down beside Varikka, my heart pounding in my chest. The sound of the tentacled horror thrashing in the water below sends shivers down my spine, and I know that we can't afford to waste any more time. "We need to move now," I hiss, my eyes scanning the ledge for any signs of movement from the creature. As I search for a way out, I spot a small opening in the wall, partially hidden behind a crumbling section of stone. "There," I point, my voice barely above a whisper. "I think there might be a passage behind that rubble."
I reach for the loose stones, my fingers working quickly to clear away the debris and create an opening large enough for us to squeeze through. The ledge beneath us shudders violently as another section of the chamber collapses, sending a shower of rubble cascading down into the water below. "Hurry," I urge Varikka, my eyes darting between her face and the growing hole in the wall. Once the opening is large enough, I take a deep breath and crawl through, my body tensing as I expect to feel the tentacled horror's grip at any moment. But as I emerge on the other side, I find myself in a narrow passageway, the walls damp and slippery with moisture. "It's clear," I call back to Varikka, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "But we need to keep moving before this whole place comes down on top of us."
I reach back, offering my hand to Varikka as she clambers through the opening. Together, we race down the passageway, our footsteps echoing off the damp stone walls. The sound of crumbling rock and churning water fades behind us, replaced by the distant scuttling of unseen creatures in the darkness ahead. As we run, I can feel my heart pounding in my chest, my breath coming in ragged gasps as I try to keep up with Varikka's longer strides. The passageway twists and turns, leading us deeper into the heart of the tower. But I know that we can't afford to stop now. We need to keep moving, to find a way out before the entire structure collapses around us. I reach for my crossbow, my fingers fumbling with the bolt as I try to ready it for whatever dangers might lie ahead. "Stay close," I pant, my eyes scanning the shadows for any signs of movement. "And be ready for anything."
Together, we race deeper into the tower, our footsteps echoing off the damp stone walls as we search for a way out of this living tomb.
I clamber through the opening Merrin made, my heart racing as I hear the tentacled horror thrashing in the water behind us. The narrow passageway is dark and damp, the air heavy with the scent of mold and decay. But it's our only chance at escape, so I follow Merrin as she leads the way deeper into the heart of the tower. The walls are slick with moisture, and I have to brace myself against the slippery stone to keep from losing my footing. Merrin's crossbow is at the ready, her eyes scanning the shadows for any signs of movement. The passageway twists and turns, leading us deeper into the bowels of the tower. But I know that we can't afford to stop now. We need to keep moving, to find a way out before the entire structure collapses around us. Suddenly, Merrin stops short, her hand reaching out to grab my arm. "Wait," she hisses, her eyes fixed on something in the darkness ahead. "I think I see something."
