Merrin's crossbow bolt embeds itself in the tentacled horror's side, but the creature's grip on Varikka's wrist tightens. Varikka feels a surge of pain as her wrist begins to fray, the rope fibers unraveling rapidly. As the creature's grip tightens, it lifts its head, momentarily releasing the grip, and gives Varikka a glimpse of its maw filled with razor-sharp teeth. The ledge beneath them creaks ominously, threatening to collapse under their combined weight.

I brace myself against the stone ledge, my crossbow at the ready. The tentacled horror's glowing eyes fix on Varikka, its maw of razor-sharp teeth snapping hungrily. I can feel the ground shaking beneath us, the entire chamber groaning and creaking as it teeters on the brink of collapse. "Varikka, we need to move now!" I hiss urgently, my heart pounding in my ears. "Can you see any way out of here?"

I scan the walls frantically, my eyes darting from shadow to shadow, looking for any hidden passages or secret doors that might offer us a chance at escape. The rope is still tied around Varikka's wrist, the other end stretching out over the water where I pulled her to safety. But it's not going to help us climb any higher. We're trapped on this ledge, with no way up and no way down. The tentacled horror slithers through the water below, its long, whip-like tentacles writhing like living whips. I can't let that stop me from acting, though. I take a deep breath, steadying my aim with the crossbow. "Hold on tight, Varikka," I whisper, my finger tightening on the trigger. "I'm going to try and shoot that thing off you."

I fire the bolt at the creature's side, watching as it embeds itself in its flesh with a sickening thud. The horror recoils, releasing its grip on Varikka's wrist for a moment. "Now!" I shout, grabbing her arm and pulling her towards the small ledge she spotted earlier. "Climb!"

We scramble up the ledge, our fingers searching for handholds in the rough stone. The ledge is narrow and treacherous, but it's our only hope of escape. As we climb higher, I can feel the ground shaking more violently beneath us, the sound of falling stone and debris growing louder with each passing second. We reach the top of the ledge just as a massive section of the chamber's wall collapses, sending a shower of rubble and debris cascading down onto the water below. The tentacled horror is momentarily distracted by the commotion, its glowing eyes fixed on the entrance as it senses the opportunity to escape the rising waters. I pull Varikka up onto the ledge beside me, my heart pounding in my chest. "We made it," I pant, my voice shaking with relief and exhaustion. "But we're not safe yet. We need to keep moving before this whole place comes crashing down on top of us."
