As Merrin's flint sparks light up the darkness, she sees Varikka clinging to a jagged rock formation, her eyes wild with fear. The tentacled horror is mere feet away, its glowing eyes fixed on Varikka. The water churns and foams around them, making it difficult to breathe. Merrin takes a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She knows she has to act fast. With a surge of adrenaline, she grabs the rope from her pack and begins to climb up towards Varikka, her hands and feet finding holds in the slick stone walls. The water pounds against her legs, threatening to sweep her away at any moment. As she climbs, Merrin shouts up to Varikka, "Hold on! I've got you!" Varikka's response is a weak cry, but she seems to be clinging to the rock for dear life. The tentacled horror begins to stir, its tentacles writhing in the water like living whips.

I'm holding on tight, fighting against the pull of the water. "Varikka!" I shout, my voice hoarse from the cold. "Climb towards me! I've got rope!"

I reach into my pack, my hands shaking as I pull out the coil of hemp. It's my last hope. I loop one end around my wrist, making sure it's secure. Then I start to climb, my feet finding purchase in the cracks between the stones. The water pounds against my legs, threatening to sweep me away at any moment. But I don't let it stop me. I keep climbing, higher and higher, until I can see Varikka clinging to the jagged rock formation above. "Hold on!" I call out to her, trying to make my voice sound more confident than I feel. "I'm coming!"

I wrap the rope around my other wrist, making sure it's taut. Then I start to swing myself towards Varikka, using the momentum of the water to propel me forward. As I draw closer to Varikka, I see the tentacled horror slithering through the water below. Its glowing eyes fix on Varikka, and for a moment, I'm paralyzed with fear. But then Varikka reaches out her hand, and I grab it tightly, pulling her towards me. "Climb!" I shout, wrapping my arms around her waist to steady her. "I've got you!"

Together, we start to climb, the rope stretching taut between us. The water churns and foams around our feet, but we keep going, higher and higher, until we reach the top of the chamber. There, we collapse onto the stone floor, gasping for breath. The tentacled horror is still down there, slithering through the water, but it can't reach us now. I look at Varikka, my eyes wide with relief. "We made it," I say, my voice trembling. "We're safe."
