Phase: escalating

The stone beneath Merrin's boots screamed a groaning protest as she shifted her weight, water surging up to lap hungrily at her soaked leathers from below. The lake wasn't rising anymore—it was rushing, a dark tide that had found new purpose and spilled into the narrow corridor with a greedy hiss. She stumbled back instinctively, nearly losing her footing on the slick stone. Her dagger felt suddenly inadequate against this new threat, a flood that moved with malevolent purpose. The water wasn't just water anymore; it was alive somehow, each wave carrying a low groan that seemed to come from the stone itself.
Merrin's gaze darted between the rising tide and the darkness beyond the passage entrance. She could hear it now—the faint rustling of something moving through the water, something with too many legs. The sound grew louder, closer, and she knew they weren't alone down here anymore. The Guardian still watched her from its alcove, those glowing eyes seeming to pulse in time with the rising water. Merrin fumbled for her crossbow, fingers clumsy with cold and adrenaline. She needed higher ground, a vantage point to see what was coming.
The ledge above offered precarious sanctuary—if she could reach it without breaking her neck or falling into the spikes below. Merrin tested her grip on the stone, muscles burning as she pulled herself up hand-over-hand. The water lapped at her boots now, cold and insistent, threatening to pull her back down. She could hear Varikka calling her name somewhere above, her voice echoing through the chamber.
"Merrin! Are you okay? What's happening?" The panic in Varikka's voice sent a jolt of fear through Merrin. She had to answer, had to assure her friend even as she climbed higher, water rising faster now, the stone groaning beneath them both.
"I'm here!" Merrin shouted back, voice hoarse with exertion and fear. "Climbing! The water's rising fast—don't come down here!"
She could feel the structure vibrating now, stone grinding against stone as the pressure built. Something was giving way below them—the entire damn tower was coming down. Merrin redoubled her efforts, fingers scrabbling for purchase on wet rock. Just a few more feet...
The ledge loomed above her, wide enough for both of them if she could just reach it in time. Merrin pulled herself up with sheer determination, muscles screaming in protest as she hauled herself onto solid ground at last. She rolled away from the edge, gasping for breath, as the water below surged upward with renewed fury.
"Varikka!" Merrin called out again, scrambling to her feet and rushing toward her friend's voice. "We need to move—now! The whole place is about to come down!"
The corridor behind them rumbled ominously as Merrin reached Varikka, grabbing her hand and pulling her along. They ran together through the darkness, water splashing at their heels, the sound of collapsing stone echoing through the tower like a death knell.
