The sound of cracking wood echoed through the chamber, a sharp snap followed by the groan of shifting stone. Merrin's heart hammered in her chest as she felt the ledge beneath her feet tremble. The water was rising fast now, already lapping at their ankles and climbing steadily upward.

"Merrin!" Varikka's voice was tight with fear behind her. "The stairs—"

"I know," Merrin hissed back, not stopping her careful ascent along the narrow shelf of rock. She could feel the vibration of the structure giving way below them, each creak and groan "

She risked a glance down as she climbed, one hand pressed flat against the damp stone wall for balance. The Tentacled Horror was still there in the churning water below, its bioluminescent markings pulsing with what looked almost like malevolent curiosity. And now...

More movement. Something else was emerging from the depths—smaller creatures with glowing eyes that seemed to float just beneath the surface of the rising lake. Great. Just great.

"Stay close," Merrin called back without looking, her focus on finding solid handholds and secure footing. The water was already up to their calves now, cold and relentless in its climb. She needed to get them both higher, needed to find some kind of shelter or escape before the entire damn tower came down around their ears.

But the ledge was narrow and treacherous, forcing her to pick each step with agonizing care while maintaining a death grip on the wall with one hand. Her injured leg protested every movement, a dull throb that promised to become a screaming agony if she pushed too hard.

"Merrin," Varikka's voice came again, barely audible over the growing roar of rushing water and collapsing stone. "There's something moving in the water—"

"I see them," Merrin cut her off sharply, not wanting to acknowledge the terror coiling in her gut. She could feel the creatures' presence now, a dark pressure at the edge of her perception that had nothing to do with the rising water or the collapsing ceiling.

She redoubled her efforts, climbing faster despite the precarious footing and her body's protests. The water was up to their thighs now, cold enough to make her teeth chatter despite her best efforts to control it. They needed heat, they needed shelter—

And then she saw it: a narrow opening in the wall above them, barely visible behind a curtain of falling water. A passage? Another chamber? Anything that wasn't this rapidly flooding hellhole.

"Up there!" Merrin called back, pointing with her free hand. "See it? We need to get to that opening before—"

Her words were cut off by another massive groan from the structure below them, louder and more ominous than any sound yet. A section of the crumbling staircase gave way completely, collapsing into the water with a tremendous splash and sending up a wall of spray that drenched them both.

"Move!" Merrin shouted, scrambling upward with everything she had left. The water was already at their waists now, cold and unforgiving as it pulled at them. Varikka followed suit, her movements frantic but controlled as she matched Merrin's climb.

They made it to the opening just as the water reached their chins, clinging to whatever protrusions they could find while the underground lake continued its relentless expansion. Merrin's teeth were chattering now from the cold, her wet clothes doing nothing to insulate her from the chill that seemed to seep straight into her bones.

But at least they were still alive—at least for now.
