Merrin kicked off the bottom hard, propelling herself toward that glimmer of light. The tentacles loosened for just a moment, and she was free—free to swim through water that felt like ice against her skin. She surfaced gasping, treading water frantically as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. The chamber was vast, its ceiling lost in darkness above. The canal fed into a larger pool, its waters dark and murky. And there, on the far side, she saw it—the source of the light. A narrow ledge jutted out from the wall, barely wide enough to stand on, but it was solid ground.

But between her and that ledge stood a new horror. Creatures with glowing eyes had emerged from the shadows, their forms indistinct in the gloom. They moved with an unsettling grace, surrounding the pool like silent sentinels. Merrin's heart hammered in her chest. She knew she needed to act fast, but she wasn't sure what to do. Varikka was trapped in the depths of this lake, surrounded by those terrifying creatures. And she had no idea how to reach her friend.

The water around her churned and foamed, sending waves crashing against her chest. A tentacle lashed out, barely missing her leg as she jumped back into the deeper waters. The creatures' hellish eyes glowed brighter, their forms rippling and twisting just beneath the surface. Merrin knew she was in trouble—serious trouble. The water was freezing, and she could feel her strength ebbing with each passing moment. She needed to find a way out of this lake, and fast.

But how? The ledge across the pool seemed like her best option, but it was so far away. And those creatures... they were moving closer now, their glowing eyes fixed on her position in the water. Merrin's mind raced, trying to come up with a plan. Maybe she could use her crossbow to create some kind of distraction, giving herself a chance to swim for the ledge while the creatures were focused elsewhere? Or perhaps there was another way out—a hidden passage or a secret exit that would allow her to bypass the pool entirely?

She knew she didn't have much time to decide. The water was already up to her waist, and she could feel its icy grip tightening around her limbs. Every moment counted now—every second mattered if she wanted to survive this ordeal. Merrin took a deep breath, steeling herself for what came next. She had to act boldly, think quickly, and trust in her own skills. After all, that was what made her a rogue—a problem-solver who could find a way out of even the most dire situations.

With renewed determination, Merrin began to plan her escape. The creatures might be terrifying, but they weren't the only threat she faced. The rising water was just as dangerous—as was the ever-present risk of structural collapse from above. She needed to move fast, stay smart, and above all else, survive. And if Varikka was still alive down there in the depths... well, then Merrin would find a way to save her too.

Because that's what adventurers did—they faced impossible odds head-on, trusting in their wits and their courage to see them through even the darkest moments. And right now, Merrin had both in spades.
