The water roared around Merrin as she kicked off the bottom hard, propelling herself toward that glimmer of light. The tentacles loosened for just a moment, giving her the opening she needed. She surged forward, breaking the surface with a gasp, and immediately began to tread water, scanning the area for any sign of solid ground.

The chamber was vast, its ceiling lost in darkness above. The canal fed into a larger pool, its waters dark and murky. And there, on the far side, she saw it—the source of the light. A narrow ledge jutted out from the wall, barely wide enough to stand on, but it was solid ground. It was her only hope.

But between her and that ledge stood a new horror. Creatures with glowing eyes had emerged from the shadows, their forms indistinct in the gloom. They moved with an unsettling grace, surrounding the pool like silent sentinels. Merrin's heart raced as she realized these weren't mindless beasts—they were guardians.

She could feel her body screaming for rest, her muscles burning with exhaustion. The cold water was sapping what little strength she had left. She knew she couldn't stay in this pool much longer without risking hypothermia or simply drowning from sheer fatigue. Her gaze darted between the creatures and the ledge, weighing her options.

The choice was clear: try to reach that ledge and hope the guardians would let her pass, or sink into the depths of the pool and join whatever lay at its bottom. Merrin took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She began to swim toward the ledge, her strokes measured and careful, each movement deliberate to conserve energy.

As she swam, one of the creatures moved closer, its eyes seeming to track her progress. Merrin's heart skipped a beat as it glided through the water with unnatural grace, closing the distance between them. She redoubled her efforts, her arms and legs working in tandem as she pushed herself forward.

The ledge grew closer with each stroke, but so did the guardian. The cold water seemed to leech away her strength with every passing second, her movements becoming slower, more labored. Just as she thought her limbs might give out entirely, her fingers brushed against the stone edge of the ledge.

With a final surge of energy, Merrin hauled herself up onto the ledge, collapsing onto the solid ground in a fit of coughs and shivers. She lay there for a moment, gasping for air, before forcing herself to sit up and survey her surroundings properly.

The guardians had gathered at the water's edge, their glowing eyes fixed upon her. They made no move to attack, but neither did they seem inclined to let her pass unmolested. Merrin's hand instinctively went to her crossbow, though she knew the weapon would be of little use against such creatures in her current state.

She needed rest, warmth, and a plan—and fast. The ledge offered none of those things. Her gaze swept across the chamber once more, searching for any other options, any way out of this predicament.
