Phase: escalating

Merrin's heart was pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears as she sprinted down the side passage, her footsteps echoing off the rough stone walls. The air was thick with dust and the stench of sulfur from the collapsing corridor behind her. As she rounded a bend, the passage opened up into a small chamber, the ceiling lost in darkness. A faint glow emanated from the far corner, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The sound of rushing water grew louder, and she knew she was close to the source.
She froze, her heart leaping into her throat at the sight of the monstrous creature rising from the canal. Its tentacles writhed and thrashed, splashing water onto the chamber floor. She couldn't tell how many there were, but in this confined space, even one was too many. The glow from those bioluminescent markings pulsed faster now, casting a sickly light over the scene. The creatures behind her grew closer.
Merrin's mind raced as she tried to assess the situation. Her heavy iron bar felt like lead in her hands, useless against such a creature. She had only one torch left, and that would do little against the rising water or the monstrous tentacles. The cold was already seeping into her bones, making it hard to think clearly.
She knew she needed to act fast, but what could she do? The water was too deep to wade through, and the creature blocked any easy escape route. She could try to climb out, but the walls were slick with algae and Goddess only knew how stable they were in this crumbling tower. Her best option might be to backtrack and find another way around, but that meant facing whatever was chasing her from behind.
The sound of rushing water grew even louder as a fresh surge of liquid poured into the chamber from somewhere unseen. The creature's tentacles thrashed excitedly at the rising level, and Merrin realized with a jolt of terror that she was running out of time. She had to make a decision, and fast.
With a deep breath, she gripped her iron bar tighter and prepared for another desperate bid for freedom. The creatures' hellish eyes were fixed on her now, their intent clear. They meant to claim her as their next meal, and she wasn't about to let that happen without a fight.
