The chamber exploded into light and sound as Merrin turned the key, the wall symbol flaring brighter than any torch could manage. Magic crackled through the air like static electricity before a storm, raising every hair on her body. The ground bucked beneath her feet, a deep rumble that spoke of stone shifting far below. Panic surged as she heard the telltale groan of collapsing masonry behind her—too close for comfort.

She scrambled backward instinctively, stumbling over her own feet in the swirling dust and magical energy. Her eyes streamed tears from the intensity of the light, but even blinded, she could feel the change. The air grew thicker with moisture, heavy and cold like a winter's night. The sound of rushing water grew louder, closer. Somewhere nearby, a massive flow had been unleashed.

The thought of Varikka trapped in that rising water twisted her stomach into knots. She should have stayed, should have tried to help instead of running blindly into this new hell. But the choice was made now, and dwelling on it wouldn't save anyone. The ground rumbled again, more debris falling somewhere close. Merrin needed to move, needed to find higher ground or a way out before this entire cursed tower came down around her.

She fumbled for her remaining torches, fingers clumsy with adrenaline. Only two left, and both of them soaked through from the waterlogged air. Her iron bar felt like lead in her grip, heavy and useless against collapsing stone. The tunnel ahead split into multiple paths—all equally dark and terrifying. She chose the one that seemed to slope upward, praying it would lead somewhere dry.

The water was already ankle-deep at her feet, ice-cold and fast-moving. It soaked through her boots in seconds, chilling her to the bone. Her teeth began to chatter as she waded forward, every muscle screaming with exhaustion. The air grew colder still as she descended deeper into the tunnel system, the walls glistening with moisture. Somewhere ahead, she could hear it—the roar of water rushing through a narrow space, the sound of immense power being unleashed.

This was madness. She should have stayed with Seraphine, let the priestess handle whatever lay ahead while Merrin focused on keeping Varikka alive. Now she was alone in the dark, freezing, exhausted, and stumbling into gods-knew-what. The shrieking sound from below echoed again, a reminder that multiple threats were active and aware of their presence. She had to proceed with extreme caution—or risk further harm to herself or her separated party members.

The tunnel opened up ahead, revealing a vast cavern bathed in an eerie blue glow. Her breath caught in her throat as she took it all in—the massive underground lake stretching out before her, its surface disturbed by something large moving beneath; the skeletal remains scattered across the shore like bleached bones on a beach; and worst of all, the glowing eyes that seemed to float in the darkness near the water's edge. She was well and truly fucked.

But there was no turning back now. The water was already waist-deep behind her, the current too strong to fight. Her only choice was forward—into the unknown depths of this hellish maze, praying she could find a way through or around this new obstacle before the rising water claimed her completely.
