Phase: escalating

Merrin charged into the darkness, her heavy iron bar held high and her eyes wide with terror. The sound of rushing water grew louder behind her, drowning out the shrieks of pursuit from deeper in the tower's bowels. She knew she couldn't keep running forever - especially not while dragging the weight of her guilt over abandoning Seraphine to whatever fate awaited her in that secret passage.
The tunnel ahead split into three branches, each one as dark and menacing as the last. Merrin cursed under her breath, her chest heaving with exertion. Every instinct screamed at her to find higher ground, to get away from this rising water that seemed determined to swallow her whole. But which way to go? The left branch sloped downward, leading deeper into the earth and towards the sound of rushing water. The middle option was a narrow, winding passage that looked barely wide enough for her to squeeze through - hardly an inviting escape route.
And then there was the right branch. It angled sharply upwards, offering the tantalizing promise of higher ground. But something about it felt wrong - the air seemed too still, too quiet. As Merrin hesitated, weighing her options, she heard a distant rumble that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The very walls were groaning around her, the stone complaining under the strain of centuries of neglect and now, her desperate flight.
Think, Merrin, she told herself, think like you were trained to do. She could feel the cold seeping into her bones already, her wet clothes clinging to her skin like a second layer of ice. Without warmth soon, hypothermia would set in - and then she'd be just as dead as if those things caught up with her.
The sound of water grew louder still, lapping at her ankles now as the first trickles began to fill the tunnel floor. Merrin made her choice. She charged into the right branch, her iron bar held ready, praying that this path would lead her somewhere safe - or at least somewhere dry.
