Phase: escalating

Merrin had barely caught her breath after squeezing through the gap, her wiry halfling frame still aching from the exertion. But the sound of rushing water sent ice through her veins - she knew that sound all too well from her days as a street rat in Waterdeep's underbelly. Scrambling to her feet, she took in the massive chamber before her: deep pools of water glowing with an eerie blue light, skeletal remains scattered across the floor like macabre artwork, and worst of all, large shapes moving beneath the surface, their eyes glinting like malevolent stars.
"Fuck," Merrin hissed under her breath, her dark eyes wide with terror. She could make out several creatures swimming lazily through the water, their forms too massive to be anything but dangerous. Her hand instinctively went to the heavy mace at her belt, but she knew even that wouldn't help much against whatever horrors lurked in those depths.
The water was already lapping at her boots, rising with alarming speed. Merrin's mind raced, weighing her options. She could try to backtrack through the gap she'd just squeezed through - but that would mean leaving Seraphine behind in the collapsing tunnels, and Merrin wasn't about to abandon her friend to whatever fate awaited them down there. Forward meant wading through this increasingly treacherous water, facing gods-only-know-what creatures head-on.
With a grim determination setting her jaw, Merrin began to move forward, her boots splashing through the shallow water. The creatures below seemed to notice her presence, their movements becoming more purposeful as they began to circle closer. She gripped her mace tighter, every muscle in her compact frame tensed and ready for action.
"Come on, come on," Merrin muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "Just a little higher ground, that's all I need." But the water seemed to mock her, rising faster now as if driven by some unseen force. She could feel the current tugging at her legs, threatening to pull her off balance.
And then, without warning, a massive wave crashed down on her from above, sweeping her off her feet and sending her tumbling into the depths. The world went dark and cold as Merrin fought against the crushing weight of the water, her lungs burning for air. She could feel something massive brushing past her in the darkness - one of the creatures, no doubt - but she was too focused on staying afloat to care.
With a desperate surge of strength, Merrin broke the surface again, gasping for air as she treaded water. The creatures had parted ways, momentarily distracted by whatever had caused that massive wave. But she knew her reprieve wouldn't last long - the water was still rising, and those glowing eyes were already turning back towards her.
"Think, damn you," Merrin growled to herself, her mind racing as she tried to formulate a plan. She could feel the current tugging at her legs, threatening to pull her under at any moment. But she refused to give up - not when Seraphine was still trapped in those collapsing tunnels, not when there was still a chance they could all make it out alive.
With a burst of adrenaline, Merrin surged forward, her arms slicing through the water with desperate strokes. The creatures snapped at her heels, their teeth glinting in the eerie blue glow of the water, but she didn't look back. She had to find higher ground, or at least some solid footing, before the rising water made it impossible to move at all.
As she swam, Merrin's mind raced with possibilities. There had to be a way out of this - a hidden passage, a magical escape route, anything. She just needed to stay alive long enough to find it. The water churned around her, the creatures' eyes glowing ever closer, but Merrin refused to give in to fear. She was a survivor, through and through - and she'd be damned if some unknown horror in a subterranean lake got the best of her now.
The current grew stronger, pulling her towards what looked like a narrow gap between two massive rocks jutting up from the depths. With a final burst of speed, Merrin launched herself forward, her hands outstretched as she aimed for the opening. She hit the rock face with a jarring impact, water spraying everywhere as she scrambled to find purchase.
For a moment, she hung there precariously, half in and half out of the water, her fingers digging into cracks in the stone. Then, with a grunt of effort, she hauled herself up onto a narrow ledge barely wide enough for her halfling feet. She collapsed there, gasping for air, as the water continued to rise below.
Merrin looked around, taking stock of her situation. The ledge extended outwards for a few feet before disappearing into darkness - but at least it was solid ground, and high enough that the rising water wouldn't reach her anytime soon. She could see the creatures below, circling in the churning depths, their eyes fixed on her with unnerving intensity.
"Well," Merrin panted, her voice barely more than a whisper as she gripped her mace tighter, "this is certainly not how I imagined this adventure ending." But despite her words, there was a glimmer of determination in her dark eyes. She might be trapped on a precarious ledge in the middle of a rising subterranean lake, surrounded by who-knew-what manner of monsters, but Merrin had survived worse than this - and she wasn't about to let some unknown horror claim her now.
With renewed purpose, she began to edge along the ledge, her back pressed against the cold stone wall as she searched for any sign of a way out. The water below churned ominously, the creatures' eyes still fixed on her every move - but Merrin refused to let fear control her. She was a survivor, a thief, and a damn good friend. And no matter what it took, she would find a way back to Seraphine and Varikka... even if it killed her.
The ledge narrowed further as Merrin inched along, her fingers trailing across rough stone as she searched for any hidden openings or secret passages. The wind whistled through the cavern, carrying with it the distant sounds of rushing water and groaning rock - reminders that the tower above was still collapsing around them, that time was running out.
But Merrin pushed those thoughts aside, focusing instead on the task at hand. She had to find a way back to her friends, had to warn them about the rising water and the creatures below. And if there was one thing Merrin knew how to do better than anyone else in this damnable party, it was finding hidden ways out of seemingly impossible situations.
As she continued along the ledge, her hand suddenly brushed against something cool and metallic - a lever! With a surge of hope, Merrin grasped it firmly and pulled. There was a grinding sound from somewhere below, followed by a sudden rush of water as a hidden passage opened up beneath her feet.
"Well," Merrin said with a grin, even as she scrambled back against the wall to avoid being swept away, "that's one way to solve the problem." The water was already beginning to pour through the new opening, creating a makeshift waterfall that would likely drain the entire chamber - and hopefully take those creatures with it.
Without hesitation, Merrin launched herself across the narrowing ledge, her arms outstretched as she aimed for a sturdy-looking outcropping on the opposite side. She hit it with a jarring impact, fingers digging into rough stone as she hung there for a dangerous moment before hauling herself up onto solid ground.
She collapsed there, gasping for air, as the sound of rushing water filled the cavern behind her. The creatures' eyes were disappearing one by one as the water level dropped rapidly, their sinister glow fading into the?.
