Phase: escalating

Merrin crouched low in the darkness, her fingers tracing the cold stone beneath her palms as she felt for any hidden mechanisms or traps. The weight of the iron bar pressed against her shoulder blades, a constant reminder of the desperate situation they'd found themselves in. Water lapped at her ankles now, the rising level a tangible measure of their diminishing time. She could hear Varikka's labored breathing somewhere behind her, punctuated by soft groans of pain each time the woman shifted position on the rubble that pinned her leg.
The tentacled horror remained motionless, its grotesque form barely visible in the gloom except for those two glowing orbs that tracked their every movement. Merrin's mind raced, trying to piece together a plan from the fragments of information they'd gathered so far. The inscription on the pedestal had been clear enough: "The keystone lies within the heart of the Devourer." But what did that mean in practice? Was the creature itself the key? Or was there some hidden mechanism inside its body that could release the final chamber?
She knew she should be focusing on finding a way to free Varikka, but the implications of what they'd stumbled upon were too immense to ignore completely. If this truly was the legendary Time-Splitting Sword they sought, then the power it represented... She shook her head, trying to clear away such thoughts. First things first: get them both out of this predicament alive.
The water rose another inch, and Merrin felt a fresh wave of panic course through her. They needed to act fast, before the entire chamber was submerged and their options became even more limited. She glanced back at Varikka, then up at the monstrous form looming over them both. "Hold still," she whispered, though whether for Varikka's benefit or her own, she wasn't entirely sure. "I'm going to try something."
With a deep breath, Merrin began to inch forward, her movements slow and deliberate as she approached the edge of the makeshift platform. The water swirled around her boots now, cold and insistent, but she paid it little mind. Her focus was entirely on the creature before them, its alien form both terrifying and mesmerizing in equal measure.
As she drew closer, Merrin could feel the power emanating from the thing, a palpable energy that seemed to thrum through the very air around it. She extended her hand cautiously, palm up, in what she hoped was a gesture of non-aggression. "We mean you no harm," she called out softly, though whether the creature possessed the capacity for understanding such concepts was anyone's guess. "We only seek passage through this chamber."
The tentacled horror remained utterly still for several long moments, its glowing eyes fixed unblinkingly upon her. Merrin held her breath, her heart pounding a staccato rhythm in her chest. Then, impossibly slow, one of the appendages began to move, extending out towards her with deliberate purpose.
Merrin froze, torn between flight and fight. Before she could make a decision, the tentacle had reached her, its tip curling around her wrist with surprising gentleness. A jolt of electricity seemed to pass through her at the contact, and Merrin gasped as visions flooded her mind - flashes of ancient times, of beings long forgotten, of power beyond mortal comprehension.
The creature's voice echoed in her head, not with words but with images and sensations that defied language. "You seek the keystone," it seemed to say, its mental presence both inviting and intimidating. "But first, you must prove your worth."
Merrin's mind reeled as she tried to process what had just happened. The tentacle released her, retracting back into the creature's body with fluid grace. She stumbled back a step, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and barely-contained excitement.
"We have to solve its riddle," she called back to Varikka, her voice trembling slightly. "It wants us to prove our worth before it'll let us pass." A wild grin spread across her face despite the circumstances. "This is it, Varikka. This has to be the legendary sword we've been searching for!"
The water continued its relentless ascent, now lapping at their knees, but Merrin barely noticed. In that moment, every instinct screamed at her to proceed with extreme caution - this creature was ancient and powerful beyond measure, and they knew next to nothing about its true nature or capabilities. But the thrill of potential discovery coursed through her veins like wildfire, overriding her more rational fears.
"We don't have much time," she said, already scanning the chamber for any clues that might help them solve this new puzzle. "We need to figure out what it wants from us, and fast."
