Phase: escalating

Merrin wades through the unnaturally cold water, her exposed skin chilled to the bone. Every instinct screams at her to find higher ground or a heat source before hypothermia sets in, but the need to press forward outweighs her body's protests. She’s halfway across now, the far shore tantalizingly close when she hears it—the unmistakable sound of something large breaking the surface of the water behind her.
Merrin spins around, mace raised defensively, just as a massive tentacle erupts from the depths, water cascading off its slick surface. It’s followed by another, and then another, as what can only be described as a colossal creature begins to emerge from the lake’s murky depths.
Her heart races as she realizes the true scale of the beast—it must be easily twice the size of a whale, its body covered in writhing tentacles that seem to move with a life of their own. And worst of all, its skin pulses with the same eerie bioluminescence as the smaller creatures that had attacked Varikka.
For a moment, Merrin is frozen in place, her mind struggling to process the sheer scale of the threat looming before her. The sound of cracking stone and groaning walls echoes through the chamber once more, a stark reminder that time is running out. She needs to act fast—either find a way to neutralize or escape this monstrous guardian, or face the very real possibility of being crushed beneath collapsing rubble while trying to evade its grasp.
Merrin’s grip on her mace tightens as she weighs her options. The cold water continues to sap her strength, and her limbs feel heavy and sluggish. She knows she can’t keep fighting like this for much longer—hypothermia will eventually claim her if the creature doesn’t first.
But even as fear grips her heart, a spark of defiance flares within Merrin’s mind. She won’t go down without a fight. Not here, not now, not like this. With a deep breath, she begins to plot her next move, her eyes never leaving the monstrous form before her.
The water around her churns and bubbles as the creature shifts its position, tentacles reaching out towards her with unsettling grace. Merrin takes a step back, her boots sinking slightly into the soft lake bed beneath her.
