Phase: escalating

The sound of rushing water fills the air, growing louder with each passing second. Merrin's eyes dart around the cavernous space, taking in every detail. The bioluminescent algae clings to the walls like a sickly green carpet, pulsating with an eerie blue light that seems to throb in time with her racing heartbeat.
She can feel the heat radiating from something massive moving through the water nearby, and a fresh wave of terror washes over her. The thought of Varikka being dragged under by some kind of... creature... is almost too much to bear. But she pushes the panic aside, focusing on what she can control. Her grip tightens on the heavy iron bar she's carrying, the cold metal a comforting weight in her hands.
Merrin's quick eyes spot a narrow ledge running along one wall of the chamber, just above the rising water line. It's not much, but it might provide a temporary refuge. She moves towards it with practiced silence, her movements fluid and controlled despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. As she reaches the ledge, Merrin hauls herself up with a grunt, her muscles burning from exhaustion and the cold.
Once safely on solid ground - albeit narrow and precarious ground - Merrin takes a moment to catch her breath. The air here is cooler than the water, but at least it's not actively trying to drown her. She looks around, trying to get her bearings in the gloomy light. The sound of Seraphine's voice echoes through the chamber, and Merrin feels a surge of relief. At least she's not alone down here.
But then Seraphine's words register fully, and the relief is quickly replaced by renewed fear. More creatures? Great. Just... great. Merrin's mind races, trying to come up with a plan. They need to find Varikka, they need to escape this cursed tower, and they need to do it before whatever else is lurking in these depths decides to make them its next meal.
She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what's to come. Time to move. And hope Seraphine has some kind of plan that doesn't involve becoming fish food.
