Phase: escalating

The sound of rushing water grew louder, echoing through the crumbling walls around them. Merrin hesitated at the threshold of the new opening, her dark eyes scanning the darkness beyond. The air that spilled out was icy cold, carrying with it a faint, otherworldly energy that made her skin prickle.
Varikka waded forward into the ankle-deep water now flooding the tunnel floor, her wet boots splashing softly. "Come on," she urged, her voice barely audible over the growing roar of the floodwaters. "We need to move before this whole place comes down."
Merrin bit her lip, her grip tightening on the heavy iron bar she carried. The thought of leaving Seraphine behind twisted in her gut, but the pragmatic survival instinct screamed that they had no choice. She could feel the weight of the crossbow and remaining torches dragging at her shoulders, every second spent here increasing their danger.
"Alright," she said finally, forcing the words out through clenched teeth. "Let's go." She stepped into the icy water, the cold biting at her soaked boots and chilled skin. The tunnel ahead stretched into darkness, punctuated by faint glows that could be anything - or nothing.
As they moved deeper into the passage, the sound of rushing water grew even louder, accompanied now by a low groaning that seemed to come from the very stone around them. Merrin knew they were running out of time. The tower was collapsing faster now, each rumble and crack sending fresh showers of dust and debris raining down.
They pressed on, the water rising steadily around their ankles as the tunnel floor began to slope downward. Merrin's mind raced, calculating escape routes and potential hazards in the darkness ahead. Every instinct screamed at her to find higher ground, but the passage seemed determined to lead them deeper instead.
By the time they reached the bottom of the slope, the water was knee-deep and flowing with increasing speed. Merrin exchanged a worried glance with Varikka as they waded through it, the current tugging insistently at their legs.
"Stay close," she murmured, her voice barely carrying over the roar of the floodwaters now rushing past them. "And keep your eyes open. Something's not right about this."
Varikka nodded wordlessly, her dark eyes wide with fear as she followed Merrin deeper into the darkness. The water around them churned and swirled, carrying with it the faintest sound of... something living.
Merrin felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold water seeping through her boots. They were being watched. And whatever was watching them, it wasn't friendly.
