Round 149 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As I watch in horror, the tentacle drags Varikka deeper into the lake, pulling her towards the darkness. The water is getting colder by the second, and I can see the fear in Merrin's eyes as she tries to pull Varikka back to safety. The glowing eyes of the creatures in the depths are fixed on us, their light pulsing in rhythm with the waves. Suddenly, a loud rumbling sound echoes through the chamber, causing the water to churn violently. The ground beneath us begins to shake, and I feel the structural integrity of the tower starting to fail. A large section of the wall collapses, sending debris crashing down onto the lake's surface. The water surges upwards, threatening to engulf us all.
By all the gods, Varikka! I lunge through the frigid water, my arms outstretched, reaching for her with every ounce of strength I have left. Her eyes are wide with terror as the tentacle tightens around her waist, pulling her towards the depths. I won't let you die, not like this!
I grasp at her hand, my fingers slipping against hers as the current threatens to sweep us both away. With a grunt of effort, I pull her towards me, heaving with all my might. The tentacle resists, its grip tightening as if alive. It won't let go! What do I do?
I look around wildly, searching for anything that might help. My eyes land on the heavy mace at my belt. That's it. I reach for it, my fingers numb and clumsy from the cold. I swing it with all my strength, bringing it down on the tentacle with a sickening crunch. The tentacle releases Varikka, recoiling into the depths of the lake. She surfaces beside me, gasping for air. "Merrin!" she cries, her voice hoarse and strained. "Thank you!"
I nod, too out of breath to speak. The water is getting colder by the second, and I can feel my limbs growing heavy with fatigue. We have to get out of here, I think frantically. Before it's too late.
I look around, searching for any sign of land or safety. But all I can see is the endless expanse of the lake, its surface churning with the force of the water cascading into it from the collapsed walls above. This is madness, I think, as I tread water alongside Varikka. We're never going to make it out of here alive.
I watch in horror as Varikka is pulled under by some unseen creature in the depths of the lake, her desperate struggles against the icy water futile. Merrin fights valiantly to reach her, swinging a heavy mace at the monster's tentacle, but it seems to have no effect. "Merrin!" I call out, my voice lost in the cacophony of falling rocks and rushing water. "The Devourer! It's coming!"
The ground beneath me trembles, and I feel the structural integrity of the tower starting to fail. A large section of the wall collapses, sending debris crashing down onto the lake's surface. The water surges upwards, threatening to engulf us all. No, no, this can't be happening! We were so close, and now... now we're going to drown in the depths of this accursed place!
I scan the area frantically, searching for any means of escape. My eyes land on a small ledge above the waterline, just out of reach. It's our only hope. "Merrin!" I shout again, pointing to the ledge. "There! We have to climb out of the water!"
I swim towards the ledge with desperate strokes, my robes heavy and cumbersome in the icy water. The current is getting stronger by the second, threatening to sweep me away at any moment. I reach the base of the ledge and try to pull myself up, but my fingers slip on the slick stone. "Varikka!" I cry out, seeing her still struggling in the water. "Get to the ledge! Now!"
I look back at Merrin, who is fighting her way through the debris-filled water towards us. Her movements are growing slower, more labored, as the cold and exhaustion take their toll. "Merrin, hurry!" I call out, my heart hammering in my chest. "We can't stay in this water much longer!"
As I watch them fight to survive in the chaos of the collapsing tower, a cold dread settles deep within me. This is it. This is how we die, lost and alone in the depths of some forgotten dungeon. But I refuse to accept that fate. We came here for a reason, with a purpose. And if we have to fight our way out of this hellhole, then so be it. "We cannot give up now," I mutter under my breath, my resolve hardening. "Not when we've come this far."
