Round 146 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin's boots sink deeper into the mud as she wades into the rising water, her eyes fixed on Varikka. Seraphine's voice is hoarse from exhaustion as she calls out, "Merrin...help me...the Devourer..." The sound of rushing water grows louder, and the air thickens with an otherworldly energy. As Merrin reaches out a hand to Varikka, a large boulder crashes down from the ceiling, barely missing her. The impact sends a shockwave through the water, causing Varikka to stumble forward. Merrin's grip on her arm tightens, and she pulls her closer. "Hold on, I've got you!" she shouts above the din of the water. The Devourer of Light draws closer, its presence palpable in the chamber. The glowing eyes of the lake creatures seem to be watching the party members with an unnerving intensity. The water continues to rise, now lapping at Merrin's knees.
"Varikka!" I shout, my voice barely audible over the rushing water. "Grab onto me! I won't let you drown!"
I reach out with both arms, fighting against the current that threatens to pull us both under. My boots sink deeper into the muddy bottom of the lake, and I feel the cold water slosh against my chest. Varikka's face is a mask of exhaustion as she struggles towards me, her arms moving slowly through the water. I can see the fear in her eyes, the desperation as she reaches out for my hands. "Merrin!" Seraphine's voice cries out from somewhere behind us. "The Devourer!"
I don't have time to look back, to see what she's seeing. All I can do is focus on Varikka, on keeping her afloat and pulling her to safety. My fingers brush against hers, and I grip tightly, pulling her towards me with all my strength. The water churns around us, threatening to sweep us both away. "Come on, wizard," I grunt, my muscles straining as I pull her closer. "Just a little more!"
Varikka's hands grasp mine, and I feel the weight of her body as I pull her against me. I wrap an arm around her waist, holding her close as I start to wade back towards the shore. Behind us, I can hear the sound of splashing, the screams of Seraphine and the others as they fight against the rising water. But all I can focus on is getting Varikka to safety, one step at a time.
By the gods, this is madness! I watch, helpless, as Merrin struggles in the rising water to pull Varikka to safety. The current is strong, the water swirling around them like a living thing. I can feel its cold, clammy touch against my own skin where it laps over my boots. They need help, but how? I'm stuck here, clinging to this rusted old bar like some kind of fool.
The Devourer... the Devourer of Light... a chill runs through me that has nothing to do with the frigid water. It's close now, I can feel it in the air, a heavy pressure building in my chest. The glowing eyes of the creatures in the lake are fixed on Merrin and Varikka, their light intensifying as if drawn to them like moths to a flame. They're not just watching them; they're waiting.
"Merrin!" I call out again, my voice hoarse with exertion and fear. "The Devourer! It's coming!"
But what can I do? I'm no use in this state. My magic is drained, my body battered from the fall into the water. All I can do is watch and pray to every deity I know that Merrin finds the strength to pull Varikka clear before it’s too late.
The sound of rushing water grows deafening, and a new fear grips me. It's not just the lake rising now; the entire chamber seems to be flooding. The water is pouring in from cracks in the ceiling, from hidden channels in the walls. It’s as if the whole tower is collapsing around us, drowning us one floor at a time.
I look up at the distant surface of the lake, where Merrin and Varikka are still fighting the current. They’re so small against the vastness of it all, two tiny figures caught in a maelstrom of water and darkness. They have to make it, I think desperately. They just have to.
My gaze drifts back to the glowing eyes in the depths of the lake, their light pulsing in rhythm with my own frantic heartbeat. They know we’re here. They want us. And soon, they may get what they desire.
