Phase: escalating

The water was cold, shockingly so, as it lapped around Merrin's thighs. She pulled Varikka close, shielding the dwarf from whatever might lurk in the depths below. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but escape was cut off by the rising lake that now lapped at their thighs. "What the hell is going on?" Varikka gasped, still coughing up water as she clung to Merrin for support.
"I don't know," Merrin replied through gritted teeth, her gaze fixed on the churning water. "But we need to move—fast." The roar of collapsing stone echoed through the cavern, accompanied by the ominous sound of rushing water. Merrin knew they had mere moments before the entire structure gave way completely. She had to think fast, to find some way out of this nightmare scenario before it was too late...
I have to keep moving. The thought pulsed through Merrin’s mind like a mantra as she staggered through the ankle-deep water towards what looked like a narrow opening in the cavern wall. It could be another dead end or a trap, but it was their best shot at escaping this rapidly flooding hellhole.
The water grew deeper with each step, now waist-high and cold enough to make Merrin’s teeth chatter. She pulled Varikka close, using her body to shield the dwarf from whatever might be lurking in the depths below. "Stay close," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the collapsing cave. "And whatever you do, don't let go of me." As they reached the opening, Merrin hesitated for a moment, her hand hovering over the rough stone edge. Was this truly their way out—or were they about to plunge into something even worse? There was only one way to find out.
With a deep breath, Merrin ducked through the narrow passage, pulling Varikka along behind her. The water inside was shallower here, barely covering their feet, and the air smelled of dust and something else—something ancient and unsettling. As they emerged into a wider chamber beyond, Merrin’s eyes widened in horror.
The walls pulsed with an eerie bioluminescent glow, casting everything in an otherworldly blue light. And at the center of the room, looming over a massive underground lake, was a creature unlike anything Merrin had ever seen before.
It was enormous, easily twice the size of a man, with a body that seemed to be composed of writhing tentacles and chunks of decaying flesh held together by some unseen force. Its skin glistened with slime and God-knows-what-else, and its head—if it could even be called that—was a mass of pulsating organs and gaping maws lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth. The creature’s eyes, if it had them, were mere pinpricks of darkness in the center of each fleshy growth, but they seemed to stare directly at Merrin and Varikka with an ancient, malevolent intelligence.
Merrin felt her stomach drop as she realized what this thing was: a guardian. And they had just stumbled into its lair. The sound of rushing water grew louder, and the ground beneath their feet began to shudder ominously. They were running out of time—and options. Merrin knew they had to act fast, to find some way past this monstrosity before the entire cave came crashing down around them all...
