Round 134 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin's grip on the tentacle falters, and Varikka is pulled further into the creature's maw. The beast's jaws snap shut just inches from her face, forcing Merrin to release her grip. Varikka tumbles backward, her body sliding down the creature's length, until she lands with a splash in the water below. The creature's eyes glow with an otherworldly light as it prepares to strike again, its tentacles coiling around the tunnel entrance like a vice.
"Varikka!" I scream, my voice echoing off the cavern walls. I watch in horror as she's pulled further into the creature's grasp, her struggles growing weaker by the second. My heart pounds in my chest as I realize I have only moments to act before it's too late. I scan the area frantically, searching for anything I can use as a weapon. My mace is still lying on the ground where I dropped it, but it's too far away to reach without putting myself at risk. I spot a jagged rock jutting out from the wall and lunge for it, my fingers closing around its rough surface. The creature's tentacles lash out towards me as I approach, but I dodge them with a quick sidestep. I raise the rock above my head and bring it down on the tentacle wrapped around Varikka's waist with all my strength. The impact sends a shockwave through my arms, but I don't let go. I swing again and again, each blow weakening the creature's grip until finally, with a sickening snap, the tentacle releases its hold on Varikka. She tumbles to the ground, landing in a heap at my feet. "Varikka!" I cry, dropping to my knees beside her. "Are you alright?" She moans softly, her eyes fluttering open. Relief washes over me as I realize she's still alive. But we're not out of danger yet. The creature looms above us, its tentacles coiling and uncoiling as it prepares to strike again. I grab my mace, my muscles tensing as I ready myself for another attack. "Can you stand?" I ask Varikka, my voice low and urgent. "We need to get out of here now."
She nods weakly, pushing herself up on unsteady legs. I wrap an arm around her waist, supporting her weight as we stagger towards the tunnel entrance. The creature's enraged roars echo behind us, but I don't dare look back. We have to keep moving. We have to find a way out of this nightmare before it's too late.
I struggle against the frigid water, my lungs burning as I fight the overwhelming urge to take a breath. The world around me is dark and murky, the faint bioluminescent fungi casting eerie shadows on the stone walls of the underground lake. Panic claws at my throat, but I push it down, focusing all my remaining energy on staying afloat.
My arms feel like lead weights as I paddle weakly, trying to propel myself towards the surface. The current is strong, pulling me back into the depths with every stroke. I can feel the pressure building in my chest, a desperate need for air that grows with each passing second.
Suddenly, a dark shape moves through the water beside me, its form shifting and undulating. It's one of the creatures Merrin mentioned, its bioluminescent markings pulsing like a malevolent heartbeat. I freeze, terror rooting me to the spot, but the creature seems more interested in the movement of the water than in me. It swims past, its long, serpentine body gliding effortlessly through the water.
I watch it go, my heart pounding so hard it feels like it might burst out of my ribs. The brief respite from the panic is over. I have to get out of this water. Now.
