Phase: escalating

Merrin had no choice but to wade into the murky water, her mace gripped tightly in her hand. The tentacle thrashed before her, its suckers leaving trails of muck and debris in its wake. She could see Varikka struggling beneath the surface, her arms flailing as she was pulled deeper into the lake by some unseen force.
"Varikka!" Merrin shouted, her voice barely carrying over the sound of rushing water and groaning stone. The tower was actively collapsing around them, with rubble falling and walls groaning ominously; the entire structure could come down at any moment. She had to navigate through unstable tunnels while avoiding falling debris.
The flood pit was a death trap now, the water level rising rapidly as more liquid poured in from unseen sources. Seraphine was still trapped inside, her status unknown. Merrin had no way of knowing if she was even still alive or if the rising water had already...
She couldn't think about that now. She had to focus on the immediate threat before her - the massive tentacle thrashing through the water, its suckers leaving trails of muck and debris in its wake. Varikka was struggling beneath the surface, her arms flailing as she was pulled deeper into the lake by some unseen force.
Merrin took a deep breath and waded forward, her eyes scanning the murky depths for any sign of what was holding Varikka underwater. The water was cold and unforgiving, seeping into her already soaked clothes and chilling her to the bone. But she couldn't stop now - not when one of her closest friends needed help.
She moved carefully, trying to keep her balance in the churning water while still maintaining a firm grip on her mace. The last thing she needed was to lose her weapon or slip and fall into the same pit that had trapped Seraphine...
I can't let this thing pull Varikka down any further, Merrin thought desperately as she waded deeper into the water. But what am I supposed to do? I'm just a rogue, not some kind of aquatic hero. She knew her limitations - she wasn't built for fighting monsters in lakes or saving people from drowning.
Focus, she told herself firmly. One step at a time. First, she needed to assess the situation properly. What was holding Varikka? Was it even alive? Could she use her rogue skills to free her friend without getting pulled into the pit herself?
Merrin's eyes widened as she caught sight of something moving in the water near Varikka - another tentacle, this one smaller and more agile than the first. It seemed to be working in tandem with the larger one, pulling Varikka deeper while also keeping her pinned against the bottom of the lake.
Shit, Merrin muttered under her breath. This is way worse than I thought. She couldn't just hack at the main tentacle - there were multiple creatures involved here, and she had no idea how many more might be lurking in the depths.
But she also couldn't just stand there doing nothing. Varikka needed help now, before whatever was holding her dragged her even deeper into the lake or...
Merrin's heart raced as she watched the smaller tentacle wrap around Varikka's leg, pulling her further away from the surface. The water was already up to Merrin's chest now, making it harder and harder for her to move effectively.
Think, damn you, she growled at herself. What would Halie do? Her friend was a powerful spellcaster, able to call upon magic to solve problems that seemed impossible for mortals like themselves. But Halie wasn't here - she was off exploring another part of the tower with Jeane...
The demon girl, Merrin thought with a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold water. What if her presence draws even more monsters? What if whatever's in these walls decides we're too much trouble and just collapses the entire thing on top of us? It seemed like a distinct possibility given how active the structural collapse had become recently.
No, Merrin shook her head firmly, trying to dispel those thoughts. One problem at a time. Right now, her only concern was saving Varikka from whatever was holding her underwater...
I need to get closer, she realized suddenly. If I can reach Varikka without getting pulled in myself, maybe I can use my mace to break free some of these tentacles. It wasn't much of a plan, but it was better than standing there doing nothing while her friend drowned before her eyes.
Merrin took a deep breath and started moving forward again, this time with more purpose. The water churned around her as she waded deeper, the cold seeping into her bones and making her muscles ache with exhaustion...
Just a little further, she told herself, gritting her teeth against the chill. Come on, Merrin - you can do this. She had to believe that or else she'd lose her nerve completely...
Almost there...
