As I step back from the tunnel, the scratching noise grows louder, and the water level rises once more, threatening to engulf us. The figure at the far end of the chamber remains still, its eyes fixed on us like two pinpricks of light in the darkness. Suddenly, a massive claw bursts forth from the shadows, swiping at Merrin with incredible force. She cries out as she stumbles back, her staff flying from her grasp. The water level surges forward, now waist-deep, and I can see the faint outline of something moving beneath the surface. It's then that I realize the lake creatures are not just lurking in the depths - they're actively hunting us. The figure at the far end of the chamber seems to be waiting for this moment, its gaze fixed intently on us as if it's been expecting this all along. With the claw still swiping at her, Seraphine knows she must act quickly to save Merrin. She grabs her staff, the crystal glowing with a faint, defensive energy, and prepares to face the lake creatures head-on.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I cry out as I stagger back, my staff flying from my grasp. The water surges forward, now waist-deep, and I can feel the cold, clammy liquid seeping into my clothes. But that's the least of my worries right now. Because there, just beneath the surface, I can see the faint outline of something moving. Something big. And hungry.

I reach for my staff, my fingers scrabbling across the slick stone floor. But it's too far away. I'll never reach it in time. And then, just as I'm about to give up all hope, I hear Seraphine's voice cutting through the chaos like a knife.

"Merrin!" she shouts, her staff held high above her head. "Get back! I've got this!"

I don't hesitate. I turn on my heel and sprint towards her, my heart pounding in my chest. The water churns around my feet, threatening to trip me up at any moment. But still, I push forward, driven by a desperate need to reach safety.

As I reach Seraphine's side, I see the creature emerge from the depths, its massive form looming over us like a shadow. It's easily twice my size, with scales that glint in the eerie light of the mushrooms and claws that look sharp enough to slice through stone. And it's not alone. More creatures are emerging from the water behind it, their forms twisting and writhing as they surge forward towards us.

Seraphine raises her staff, the crystal pulsing with a blinding light. She chants something under her breath, her voice rising in a crescendo of power. And then, with a final word, she brings the staff down on the stone at her feet.

A shockwave of energy ripples out from the impact, slamming into the creatures and sending them flying back into the water. The lead creature roars in pain, its form writhing as it struggles to right itself. But Seraphine is already on the move, her staff held at the ready as she steps forward to meet the next wave of attackers.

I reach for my own weapon, my hand closing around the cold, familiar grip of my mace. I've faced my share of monsters in my time, but nothing quite like this. These creatures are unlike anything I've ever seen before, their forms twisting and changing with each passing moment as if they're made of liquid shadow.

But still, I don't hesitate. I step forward to join Seraphine, my mace raised high above my head. The creatures surge towards us, their claws extended and their jaws snapping. And then, with a roar of defiance, we meet them head-on, our weapons flashing in the dim light as we fight for our lives.
