Round 97 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin's staff casts a faint glow on the surrounding water, illuminating a narrow, winding tunnel ahead. The creature's tentacles writhe in response, their slimy appendages reaching out like grasping fingers. As they swim closer to the tunnel entrance, the water pressure increases, threatening to crush them beneath its weight. The humming noise grows louder with each passing moment, vibrating through the water and setting Merrin's teeth on edge. The tunnel entrance yawns open before them, revealing a dark, air-filled chamber beyond. Water rushes in from the lake, swirling around the edges of the tunnel like a churning vortex. A faint, flickering light emanates from within the chamber, casting eerie shadows on the walls. A figure stands at the far end of the chamber, partially obscured by the swirling water. The light source is a series of luminescent mushrooms, their caps glowing with an ethereal blue-green light. The figure is shrouded in shadow, making it impossible to discern any features.
I grip my staff tighter, the crystal's glow reflecting off the churning water. The creature's tentacles writhe even more frantically now, their slimy appendages reaching out like grasping fingers. I can feel the water pressure bearing down on us, threatening to crush us at any moment. But then I see it - a dark tunnel yawns open before us, revealing an air-filled chamber beyond. Water rushes in from the lake, swirling around the edges of the tunnel like a churning vortex. A faint, flickering light emanates from within the chamber, casting eerie shadows on the walls. And there, at the far end of the chamber, stands a figure. It's partially obscured by the swirling water, but I can make out its silhouette. The light source is a series of luminescent mushrooms, their caps glowing with an ethereal blue-green light. I squint, trying to get a better look at the figure. It's hard to make out any features in the dim light, but something about it seems...off. There's a stillness to it, a quiet watchfulness that makes my skin crawl. The humming noise grows louder as we approach the tunnel entrance, vibrating through the water and setting my teeth on edge. It's like the very air is alive with some unseen force, pulsing and thrumming with an ancient, malevolent energy. I glance back at Seraphine, her face pale and drawn in the flickering light of the mushrooms. She nods at me, her eyes wide with fear but also determination. We have no choice. We must find a way out of this nightmare, or be crushed beneath the weight of the collapsing tower above. And so, with a deep breath and a silent prayer to any gods who might be listening, I take the first step into the tunnel. The water swirls around my legs, cold and clammy against my skin. But I don't hesitate. I wade forward, staff raised high, ready for whatever horrors may lie ahead. The figure at the far end of the chamber doesn't move, but I can feel its gaze on us, heavy and oppressive. It's like it's waiting for something, biding its time until we're within striking distance. I tighten my grip on my staff, the crystal's glow casting eerie shadows on the walls around us. The air is thick with the scent of mold and decay, making my nose wrinkle in disgust. But still, I push forward. We have no choice. This is our only way out. And so, with a deep breath and a silent prayer, I take another step into the unknown.
The air in this strange chamber is thick and heavy, saturated with an ancient, oppressive energy that makes my skin crawl. The luminescent mushrooms cast an eerie, blue-green glow on everything they touch, including the figure at the far end of the room. It stands perfectly still, its form shrouded in shadow, watching us approach. I can feel its gaze on me like a physical weight, cold and unwavering. My heart hammers against my ribs as we wade deeper into the water-filled tunnel, the current swirling around our legs with each step. The humming noise grows louder, a deep thrum that seems to resonate right down into my bones.
"Seraphine," I whisper, my voice so low it's almost lost in the ambient sounds of the chamber. "Can you feel that? It's like... like some kind of magic is at work here. A powerful one." I take another step forward, the water now up to my waist. The figure doesn’t move, but I swear its presence intensifies, becoming more solid somehow. My staff feels suddenly heavy in my hand, its usual warmth now seeming dull and lifeless.
I glance back at Merrin, her face illuminated by the eerie light of the mushrooms. She looks as wary as I feel, her eyes darting between me and the figure at the end of the room. She gives a slight nod, her jaw set with determination. We have no choice but to proceed. To stop now would mean being crushed beneath the collapsing tower above us, or worse - falling victim to whatever lurks in this watery abyss.
With a deep breath, I turn my attention back to the figure. It’s hard to make out any details in the dim light, but something about its posture suggests an almost regal stillness, a patient waiting for a specific moment. As if it has been expecting us all along. A chill runs down my spine at the thought.
I raise my staff slightly, the crystal glowing faintly in the gloom. I feel a flicker of power within it, but it’s weak, strained. The ambient magic here is overwhelming, sapping the strength from my own spells. But we can’t turn back now. We have to find out what this creature wants, if anything at all. Or if it even is a creature in the traditional sense.
I take another step forward, the water now lapping at my chest. Merrin follows close behind, her own weapon held ready. The humming noise reaches a crescendo, vibrating through the water and making my teeth ache. And then, as if on cue, the figure speaks. Its voice is deep, resonant, and utterly inhuman, echoing off the walls of the chamber like thunder.
"Welcome," it says, the single word seeming to contain multitudes, heavy with an ancient, terrible power.* "I have been waiting for you."
