Phase: escalating

The water's chill seeped into Merrin's bones as she treaded carefully through the newly revealed passage, her heavy mace held at the ready. The secret corridor was narrow and filled with waist-deep water that glowed with an eerie, ethereal light. Every surface seemed to shimmer and shift in the strange illumination, making it difficult to discern solid ground from illusion. Behind her, Seraphine followed close, her robes billowing beneath the water like dark wings.
"Stay alert," Merrin hissed over her shoulder, her eyes scanning the shadows ahead. The passage curved sharply to the right, disappearing into darkness beyond the reach of their torchlight. The sound of rushing water grew louder as they progressed, and Merrin could feel a current tugging at her legs, urging them forward.
Suddenly, the floor beneath them shifted violently. Seraphine cried out as she lost her footing, splashing loudly as she tried to right herself. Merrin whirled around, grabbing for her friend's arm with one hand while keeping her mace up with the other. "Easy!" she called, pulling Seraphine closer.
For a moment, they clung to each other in the churning water, hearts pounding. Then, a deafening crack echoed through the passage. A massive stone chunk dislodged from the ceiling high above them, plummeting downwards with terrifying speed. Merrin's eyes widened as she watched it fall, her mind racing to calculate angles and trajectories.
"Down!" she shouted, shoving Seraphine beneath the surface just as the stone crashed into the water mere feet away. The impact sent a massive wave of icy water cascading over them both, followed by a shockwave that threatened to knock them off their feet. Merrin struggled to maintain her grip on Seraphine and her mace simultaneously, her lungs burning for air.
As they surfaced again, gasping and sputtering, Merrin caught sight of something moving in the shadows behind them - a dark shape, like the tentacles of some great sea monster. Fear froze her heart for an instant before she forced herself to act. "Swim!" she yelled, pushing off with all her strength towards what she hoped was solid ground.
Seraphine followed suit, her robes tangling around her limbs as she fought against the water's pull. The passage behind them began to flood with water, its icy tendrils creeping towards them like living things. The structure above groaned ominously once more, a fresh cascade of rubble raining down around them.
They swam desperately, the cold biting into their flesh and stealing what little strength they had left. The passage seemed endless, stretching out before them in an ever-deepening pool of darkness and terror.
