As Merrin wades deeper into the churning water, the creature beneath the surface lunges again, its tentacles whipping through the water mere inches from her face. She barely avoids being dragged under, her crossbow bolt striking the water with a loud crackle. The force of the impact sends a shockwave through the water, causing it to churn and foam even more violently. Merrin quickly realizes that she can't hold her position for much longer. The water is rising rapidly, lapping at her waist now, and she knows that if she doesn't act fast, she'll be swept away. She spots a narrow ledge nearby and makes a dash for it, her feet pounding against the slick stone floor. As she reaches the ledge, she hears Seraphine's voice, strained with effort, "Merrin! If you see Varika, don't try to fight the creature! Just grab her and get out of there as fast as you can!"

The water continues to rise, threatening to engulf Merrin at any moment. She looks around frantically, searching for any sign of Varika or an escape route. Suddenly, a loud rumbling noise echoes through the cavern, making the ground shudder beneath her feet.

I grit my teeth, adrenaline surging through my veins as I scramble onto the narrow ledge, narrowly avoiding being swept away by the churning water. My heart hammers in my chest as I take in the scene before me - the dark, churning depths of the underground lake, the ominous creature lurking just beneath the surface, and the rising floodwater threatening to engulf us all. "Varrika!" I shout, my voice barely audible over the roar of the deluge. "Where are you?!"

I scan the surface of the water frantically, searching for any sign of my friend. The creature is still circling, its dark form a constant threat looming just out of sight. I know we don't have much time left before it lunges at us again. Seraphine's voice rings out from behind me, strained with effort as she tries to hold back the flood with her magic. "Merrin! If you see Varrika, don't try to fight the creature! Just grab her and get out of there as fast as you can!"

I nod grimly, my hands tightening on my crossbow. I know Seraphine is right - we're out of options, and time is running out. With a deep breath, I start to wade back into the water, my heart pounding in my chest. The ledge is slick with moisture and my feet slip as I try to find purchase. I can feel the current tugging at my legs, threatening to drag me under at any moment. But I don't hesitate. Varrika is still out there somewhere, fighting for her life, and I'll be damned if I let her down again. As I wade deeper into the churning water, I keep my eyes peeled for any sign of movement or threat. The creature is still circling, its dark form barely visible through the churning foam. But something else catches my eye - a flash of red, just beneath the surface, moving quickly. My heart leaps into my throat as I realize what it is. Varrika's hair, thrashing wildly as she struggles against the creature's grip. Without hesitation, I raise my crossbow and fire, the bolt slicing through the water with a sharp hiss. Please DM: Is there any way I can help Varrika from where I am or will I have to get in the water to reach her?
