The shimmering dome of energy created by Seraphine's incantation holds back the water for a moment, giving Merrin a small window of time to think. The tunnel opens up into a large cavern, and Merrin gasps as she takes in the sight before her. A massive underground lake stretches out before them, its surface churning and foamy. And there, in the water, Merrin sees shapes moving beneath the surface - and one of those shapes is unmistakably Varika, her body being dragged down by an unseen force. The sound of the flood fades into the distance, replaced by a low, ominous rumbling that seems to come from all around them. As they move closer to the lake, the water level begins to rise again, threatening to engulf them. Merrin knows they have to act fast if they want to survive.
I stare in horror at Varrika's limp form being dragged beneath the surface, my heart pounding in my chest. The water is rising rapidly now, lapping at our waists and threatening to pull us under as well.
"Seraphine!" I shout over the roar of the flood. "We have to do something!"
I raise my crossbow, aiming it at the churning water where Varrika disappeared. "I'll try to shoot whatever's got her. You see if you can conjure up some magic to hold it off or slow down this damn flood!"
I take aim, my hands shaking as I try to steady my grip on the weapon. The water is up to my chest now, and I can feel the current tugging at my legs, threatening to drag me under at any moment.
"Hurry!" I call out to Seraphine, my voice barely audible over the noise of the deluge. "We don't have much time!"
As I wait for Seraphine's spell, I scan the surface of the lake, searching for any sign of movement or threat. The shapes beneath the water are growing larger and more distinct now, and I can see a large, dark form circling just below the surface, its outline obscured by the churning foam.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I know I have to do. Varrika is out there somewhere, fighting for her life, and I'll be damned if I let her down again.
"Varrika!" I shout, my voice raw with emotion as I fire my crossbow into the water. "Hold on! We're coming for you!"
With that, I wade forward, my weapon at the ready, and prepare to face whatever horrors await us in the depths of this godforsaken lake. The water is up to my chest now, and the current is growing stronger with each passing second. But I don't hesitate. I know what's at stake, and I'll do whatever it takes to save my friends - even if it means facing my own mortality head-on.
