Seraphine's desperate incantation creates a shimmering dome of energy around them, holding back the water for a moment. The dome ripples and distorts, but it holds, giving Merrin a small window of time to think. She looks at Seraphine, then at the narrow opening in the wall, and nods. "Let's go!" she says, wading towards the tunnel. As they move forward, the water lapping at their legs, they hear a loud scuttling noise coming from deeper within the tunnel. It's followed by a faint scratching sound, like claws on stone. The dome of energy begins to falter, its power waning as the water pressure increases. Merrin knows they have to move fast if they want to survive. The tunnel opens up into a large cavern, with a massive underground lake stretching out before them. The water is churning and foamy, and Merrin can see shapes moving beneath the surface. One of those shapes is Varika, her body being dragged down by an unseen force.

As we wade through the water towards the tunnel, I can feel the weight of my soaked clothes pulling me down. The sound of the flood is deafening, drowning out any other noise. I glance back at the pit where Varrika was dragged under, my heart heavy with grief and fear. We're on our own now, just Seraphine and me, against whatever horrors this dungeon holds.

I grip my crossbow tightly as we enter the tunnel, my senses on high alert. The water is up to my chest now, and I can feel it tugging at my legs, threatening to pull me off balance. I brace myself against the current, my muscles aching from the strain of fighting against it.

As we move deeper into the tunnel, the sound of the flood begins to fade, replaced by a different noise - a low, ominous rumbling that seems to come from all around us. The walls are slick with moisture, and I can see dark shapes moving in the shadows, just out of sight.

Suddenly, a loud scratching noise echoes through the tunnel, followed by a high-pitched screech that sets my teeth on edge. I feel Seraphine tense beside me, her staff glowing faintly in the darkness.

"What was that?" she whispers, her voice trembling with fear.

"I don't know," I mutter back. "But it doesn't sound friendly."

We press on, our hearts pounding in our chests as we try to ignore the eerie sounds around us. The tunnel opens up into a large cavern, and I gasp as I take in the sight before me.

A massive underground lake stretches out before us, its surface churning and foamy. And there, in the water, I see shapes moving beneath the surface - and one of those shapes is unmistakably Varrika, her body being dragged down by an unseen force.

"No," I breathe, my voice choked with horror. "Varrika!"

Seraphine grips my arm, her nails digging into my skin. "Merrin, we have to help her!"
