Round 55 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika's voice echoes through the chamber, Seraphine takes another step forward, her staff still raised, despite the churning water. The creature's tentacles tighten their grip on Merrin's limbs, but Seraphine's incantation continues to weaken its hold. Suddenly, a loud splash echoes through the chamber, and Varrika's figure appears at the narrow opening in the wall, beckoning for them to follow. However, as Seraphine turns to join her, she realizes that the water around her has grown even colder, and the glowing fungi on the walls seem to be pulsing faster, casting eerie shadows across the chamber. The air is thick with an unnatural silence, as if the very creatures of the lake are holding their breath in anticipation of what's to come. Seraphine must decide whether to trust Varrika and follow her through the opening, or to wait and assess the situation before proceeding.
I wade deeper into the underground lake, my heart pounding in my chest as I scan the shadows for any sign of movement. The water is cold and clammy against my skin, and the glow of the fungi on the walls casts an eerie light across the chamber. Suddenly, a massive shape looms out of the darkness ahead, its eyes fixed on me with an unblinking malevolence. I raise my staff, ready to defend myself against whatever creature has emerged from the depths. The monster is a giant, tentacled beast, its body undulating as it moves towards me. I can feel the water around me grow colder, as if the creature's presence has drawn the lake's chill into the surrounding water. With a surge of adrenaline, I ready my staff and prepare to attack. The creature's tentacles begin to wrap around the chamber, its grip closing in on me like a vice. I must decide how to react next, as the creature's crushing pressure threatens to squeeze the life out of me.
I feel the cold water seeping into my bones, chilling me to the core as I watch Merrin disappear behind that massive stone door. My heart hammers in my chest, a frantic drumbeat of fear and helplessness. The creature's tentacles writhe and coil around her limbs, pulling her deeper into the abyss with each passing second.
The air in the chamber grows thick, heavy with an unnatural silence that presses down on me like a physical weight. The glowing fungi on the walls pulse faster, their light casting eerie, dancing shadows across the churning surface of the lake. My staff feels heavy in my hands, its magic barely contained within the crystal at its tip.
I take a shaky step forward, my robes instantly soaked through as I wade into the frigid water. Every instinct screams at me to run, to save myself, but I know Merrin is out there, trapped and struggling for her life. I can't abandon her, not like this.
Varrika's voice crackles over the comms device, a distant beacon of hope in the oppressive darkness. "Guys, I've found a way out! Follow me!" I spin around, my eyes frantically scanning the chamber until I spot the narrow opening in the wall, partially hidden by the glowing fungi. It's small, but it might be enough for us to squeeze through. It could be our only chance.
But even as I see the potential escape route, I feel the creature's presence behind me, a malevolent energy that seems to emanate from the very depths of the lake itself. The water around me grows colder still, and I shiver violently, my teeth chattering against each other. My mind races, trying to decide between following Varrika or attempting something – anything – to save Merrin.
I raise my staff higher, the crystal flaring with a weak, flickering light as I call upon the last dregs of my magical energy. The water around me froths and steams, creating a small bubble of calm amidst the churning chaos. It's not much, but it's something. Maybe if I can just get close enough...
I take another step forward, my resolve hardening despite the fear gnawing at my insides. Merrin needs me. And right now, this is all I have to give her.
