Round 48 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin takes another step forward, the water swirls around her, threatening to sweep her off her feet. The skeletal remains on the surface seem to be closing in, their glowing eyes fixed on her like predators. Suddenly, a wave crashes against the shore, sending spray high into the air, and Merrin stumbles back, nearly losing her balance. Her staff slips from her grasp, and she catches herself just in time, her fingers closing around the worn wooden handle like a lifeline. The tower's collapse rumbles above, its final moments of groaning stone and crashing debris now mere seconds away. The sound is deafening, and Merrin knows she must move fast if she wants to find a way out of the lake before it's too late. She looks around frantically, her eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of an escape route. That's when she sees it - a narrow, winding tunnel that leads off into the depths of the lake, partially hidden by the skeletal remains.
I spot the narrow, winding tunnel partially hidden by the skeletal remains and my heart leaps with a desperate hope. It's our only chance now, our only hope of escape before this accursed place claims us all. With a final glance at the tower above, its collapse now mere moments away, I take a deep breath and dive beneath the surface of the lake, swimming hard towards the tunnel entrance. The water is cold and dark, filled with the twisted shapes of long-dead things, but I don't have time to think about them now. All that matters is reaching that tunnel, finding a way out of this nightmare before it's too late. I kick my legs harder, propelling myself forward through the murky depths, my lungs burning for air. The entrance to the tunnel looms before me, a dark and ominous opening in the stone. I reach out with one hand, grasping at the edge of the entrance, and pull myself inside just as the tower above collapses with a deafening roar, sending a wave of debris and rubble crashing down into the lake behind me. For a moment, I hang there in the darkness, gasping for breath, my heart pounding in my ears. Then, slowly, I drag myself further into the tunnel, away from the collapsing tower and into the unknown depths below. The air here is thick and heavy, filled with the musty scent of ancient stone and something else - something foul and rotten that makes my stomach churn. I can hear water dripping somewhere in the distance, echoing off the walls of the tunnel like a sinister heartbeat. I know I should be terrified, should be running as far and as fast as I can from this place. But all I can think about is Merrin, lost somewhere in the depths of this labyrinth, and the desperate hope that I might still find her alive. With a deep breath, I push myself up to my feet, staff clutched tightly in my hand, and start to make my way deeper into the tunnel, ready to face whatever horrors might lie ahead. "Merrin," I whisper into the darkness, my voice barely audible over the dripping of the water. "Where are you? I'm coming for you."
