The air in the stone passage seemed to thicken with each passing moment, heavy with the weight of ancient magic and impending doom. The walls groaned around them like a living creature in agony, fresh cracks spiderwebbing across the already crumbling surfaces as yet another tremor shook the tower's foundations. Seraphine pressed her back against the cold stone, her sharp eyes scanning every inch of their surroundings for any sign of structural weakness or hidden escape route.

"You're sure this is the way?" she called out, her voice barely carrying over the ominous rumble that seemed to emanate from deep within the earth itself. "Because I'm starting to think this entire section might be one big deathtrap."

Jeane paused mid-step, turning back with an expression that managed to convey both annoyance and concern in equal measure. Her crimson eyes glinted in the flickering torchlight as she surveyed the unstable passage ahead. "I'm following the magical signature, Seraphine. It leads down here—Merrin's this way."

The very stones beneath their feet seemed to shift ominously at her words, and a fresh cascade of dust rained down from above. Seraphine winced as her injured shoulder protested the movement, but she gritted her teeth against the pain. "Fine," she snapped back, her patience wearing thin. "But if this whole thing comes crashing down around our ears, I'm blaming you."

Jeane's wings twitched in irritation, the dark leathery membranes rustling softly in the oppressive stillness of the passage. "Just stay close and try not to fall apart," she retorted, already turning back to face the darkness ahead. "And maybe keep your voice down—we don't know what else might be lurking in this place."

Before Seraphine could respond with a biting comeback, the ground beneath them gave way with a horrifying groan of stressed stone. She had a brief moment to register her own disbelief before she was plummeting into darkness, her scream lost in the roar of rushing air and collapsing masonry.
