The stone passage groaned ominously around them, each tremor more violent than the last. Seraphine pressed herself against the wall as another shockwave rippled through the ancient masonry, fresh dust and debris raining down from above. The faint symbols along the stone surface pulsed with an eerie malevolent light, seeming to feed off the structure's distress. "Jeane!" she called out again, her voice echoing in the confined space. "This whole place is about to come down! We need to get Merrin and get out—now!"

The Bound Spirit flickered before her once more, its coal-black eyes burning with an intensity that made Seraphine's stomach twist. The ghostly figure floated closer, its tattered robes seeming to absorb what little light filtered through the passage. "You seek to free your companion?" Its voice echoed in her mind rather than the air around them, a chilling mixture of amusement and warning. "Then you must first prove your worthiness... or join her in the depths below."

Seraphine's injured shoulder screamed as she shifted her weight, trying to find a more secure stance on the treacherous footing. The stone beneath her felt feverishly warm now, pulsing with the same malevolent rhythm as the symbols on the wall. She could feel an ancient power seeping into the very air around them, thick and suffocating. "What kind of test?" she demanded, her voice barely steady despite her best efforts.

The spirit's form seemed to solidify for a moment, its pale features twisted in a grotesque approximation of a smile. "A trial of strength... or perhaps a test of will." It gestured toward the wall with a translucent hand, and one of the symbols flared brighter. "Prove that you possess the power to withstand my influence, and perhaps I will allow your passage..." Its voice trailed off ominously.

Seraphine's eyes narrowed as she studied the glowing symbol. This felt wrong—dangerously wrong—but they needed to reach Merrin before the entire chamber collapsed. She reached out with her good arm, fingers hovering just above the pulsating rune. The air around it shimmered with dark energy, and she could feel a malevolent presence pushing back against her. "Jeane!" she shouted one last time, her heart pounding in her chest. "If you can hear this—don't come down here! It's not safe!"

The moment her fingertips brushed the symbol, a jolt of raw power surged through her body. Seraphine cried out as searing agony lanced through her injured shoulder, and the world seemed to tilt crazily around her. The Bound Spirit's laughter echoed through her mind as she stumbled backward, gasping for breath. The stone at her feet shifted ominously, a large section of the wall beginning to crumble inward with alarming speed.
