Jeane moved with predatory grace across the crumbling catwalk, her wings half-spread for balance as she tested each stone before committing her full weight. The ancient structure groaned beneath her, a living thing complaining under the strain of their desperate passage. Merrin’s mangled corpse lay sprawled on the chamber floor far below—a grim reminder of the tower's appetite for careless flesh.

  • Her fall was inevitable—one less liability for us to manage in this cursed place. The crystal on Halie’s breastplate pulses ominously as the whispers intensify around us. I focus on the magical signature, trying to discern its nature through the ambient chaos.

"This isn’t some random collapse," she called up to them, her voice carrying an edge of barely contained irritation, "the structure is alive—adjusting itself like a creature defending its lair." The books that had been floating moments before now lay scattered across the floor, their pages rustling ominously in a wind that seemed to come from nowhere.

Seraphine stood frozen on the creaking catwalk above, her sharp eyes wide with apprehension as she watched the unfolding chaos below. The crystal on her breastplate pulsed rhythmically, each beat sending a visible shimmer through the air around them.

  • I stare at the pulsing runes on the floor, my eyes narrowing as I try to decipher their meaning. "They're not just runes," she called back down, her voice barely carrying over the groans of stressed stone and the rising wind, "they're a magical matrix—the heart of this chamber's structure. And it looks like we just activated its defense mechanism." Her gaze flicked to Merrin’s body, then back to the shifting books around them. "Merrin wasn't an accident—she was the first test. A sacrifice to awaken whatever dark power governs this place." The air crackled with raw magical energy as the tower's defenses came fully online.

The Bound Spirit's voice echoed in their minds once more, its tone now tinged with an air of expectation: "The trial will begin soon. Are you prepared to face the darkness within yourselves?" The symbol on the ground began to glow brighter, its light illuminating a cryptic message etched into the stone: "Face the darkness in the heart of the tower." Suddenly, a faint rumbling noise echoed through the tower, causing the ground beneath their feet to tremble. The party exchanged nervous glances.

  • You want us to face your darkness? Jeane thought darkly. Fine. Let's see which of us is more twisted before this is over.
