Phase: escalating

The ancient stone tower loomed overhead, its jagged peak seeming to pierce the very fabric of the stormy sky above. The wind howled around them, carrying with it the faint sound of... something else. Something that made the hairs on their necks stand up.
"Enough," Jeane said, her voice cutting through the wind like a blade. "We didn't come here to play your twisted games." She took a step forward, her wings half-spread in an instinctive gesture of readiness, the leathery membranes catching the gusts and holding them steady.
Halie clutched her silver cross tighter, the metal cold against her palm as she watched Elric enter through the far door. His words sent a fresh wave of unease through her already tired body. "Cost?" she echoed, her voice barely more than a whisper that the wind threatened to tear away. "What kind of cost are you talking about?"
Seraphine's sharp eyes narrowed as she processed Elric's warning. The phrase 'cost of freeing a soul' wasn't some idle metaphor—it was a concept straight out of forbidden texts she'd only read in academic seclusion, never expecting to encounter in the flesh. "Elric," she began, her voice carrying an edge that betrayed both academic excitement and genuine concern, "what you're suggesting... it's not just about breaking magical bonds. It's about consequences, about energies that shouldn't be trifled with."
Merrin felt a cold dread settle into her stomach as the implications of Elric's words sank in. She'd faced plenty of dangers in her travels—a dozen kinds of monsters, bandits, treacherous terrain—but this felt different. This felt like playing with forces that didn't care about their quest or their good intentions. Her hand tightened around the haft of her mace, the familiar weight offering little comfort against the unseen threat.
Jeane's mind raced, trying to piece together what they were truly up against now. The bound spirit hadn't just been a magical obstacle—the entity was tied to something darker, something that required... payment? Favors? Sacrifices? She glanced at her companions, seeing her own unease mirrored in their faces. This wasn't the simple rescue mission they'd set out on.
The wind died suddenly, leaving an unnatural stillness that pressed against their ears. The chamber seemed to hold its breath, waiting for their response to Elric's ominous revelation.
